Hamilton phamilton@new.rr.com May 23, 2007, 3:34 pm Omro Journal Sept. 1, 1887 Information from the OMRO JOURNAL dated Thursday August 18, 1887 Number 48 (third column half way down) "James Hamilton who has been ailing for some years, had a stroke of paralysis a few days since. and will probably not live many days." followed by a Thursday August 25, 1887 Number 49 issue: "James Hamilton, who was so feeble when we went to press last week is still alive but gradually failing and the end is not far off." followed by a Thursday September 1, 1887 Number 50 issue: "James Hamilton, who has been ailing for some years and has been gradually sinking for some weeks, breathed his last at his residence in this village, on Friday evening at 10 o'clock. Mr. Hamilton has been a resident of Omro for a long time and was well and favorably known. The funeral was held from the house on Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. Eldredge preached the sermon. The funeral was conducted by the Omro Oddfellow's Lodge Mr. hamilton being a member of that order. " Additional Comments: James Hamilton moved from Greenville, ME to Omro, WI about 1864 per the earliest Wisconsin land transaction found. James and his first wife who was Emiline Hooper both were born in in Cambridge, ME. In 1850 James is found in the Federal Census in Greenville with his wife Emiline and their three daughters Eunice L.; Harriet Amelia; Justina Antoinette. Emiline died in Greenville in Dec. of 1855. James then married Mehitable Jane Young born in Greenville, Maine 1836. They were married in Oshkosh Wisconsin May 6, 1865. They had 4 children born to them while in Omro. Alberta 1867; Ina about 1871; Sumner in 1875; Sadie (Susan) born about 1883. James is buried in the Omro Cemetery south of Omro. Located 1/2 'down 2 Olin' road. Just to the back and left of DESIAH MOODY's Grave is where James is buried with 3 empty plots (he owns them). His gravestone can not be read. The top says 'FATHER' and the face says:JAMES HAMILTON DIED AUG 26 1887 AGED 73 YEARS. Following James' death by 1889 Mehitable moved to Rhinelander with her childred. Ina died from a forest fire at Hazelhurst while protecting school children she taught in 1891. Berta died of diptheria in Greenville, ME while visiting her grandparents Elijah & Mary H. Cousins-Young in 1890. Sadie died after 1930 marriage to David Dudley Rosenberry in The Pas, Manitoba. Sumner died in Rhinelander in 1935 just 10 years after his mother Mehitable Young-Hamilton died in 1925. 6-13-1864: A Warranty Deed in Winnebago County is transacted for the sum of $100.00 as James purchased "the following piece or parcels of land situated in the County of Winnebago State of Wisconsin. Lot 22 and the north half of lots 20 and 21 in Block four in Bickwith's Addition to the Village of Omro. Previous owners were William W. and Lovina Drake and Andrew J and Perlina Drake. 8-18-1868: A Warrenty Deed in Winnebago County is transacted for a sum of $1,000.00. James purchased "Described Real Estate Situated in the County of Winnebago and State of Wisconsin to wit commencing at the North East corner of the West half of the North East quarter of Section Number 17, Town 18 Range 15 thence West on the North line of said section 17, 11 rods and 22 links thence South 15 rods thends East 11 rods 20 links thence North 15 Rods to the place of Beginning." Land was purchased from T. J. Hotchkiss. 6-18-1884: A Quit Claim deed: This maybe the lot James purchased for $100.00 now is sold for $300.00 by Mehitabel J. Hamilton to a Charles W. Bushnell of Omro, WI. 11-8-1893: Warranty Deed: Mehitable J. Hamilton (widow) of Rhineland Onieda County and State of Wisconsin appears to sell the $1,000.00 parcel of land for $400.00 Charles H.
