William E. Hanson, an old and well known resident of this city, died last evening at his residence, corner of Union street and Wisconsin avenue. For many years deceased had followed the lumbering business, but of late years had retired from active business. He was a native of Buxton, Me., where he was born in 1819. He came to Oshkosh in 1854. During the war Mr. Hanson was quite a prominent politician and in 1863-4 was a member of the legislature from this city. During the greenback epidemic in the seventies, he again became active in politics for a time, and was one of the local leaders of that movement. He was a man of keen perceptions, and of cool and calculating judgment. He leaves a wife and two daughters. The funeral will be held from the residence tomorrow, Thursday, at three o'clock. Daily Northwestern August 6, 1891 Funeral of Mr. Hanson Old Settlers Honor the Memory of the Deceased Lumberman The funeral of the late William E. Hanson took place this afternoon from the residence on Wisconsina venue and was largely attended, cnspicuous among those present being many old settlers who had known the deceased in pioneer days. The services were conducted by the Rev. Lowell C. Smith, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, who alluded feelingly to the traits of character which endeared Mr. Hanson to those who knew him intimately. The singing was rendered by Miss Bessie Daggett and William H. Dale. The following acted as pall-bearers: Stephen Radford, James D. Campbell, George Streeter, E.W. Viall, J. W. Tolman and A. G. Randall. The remains were buried at Riverside.
