Obituary: Winnebago County, Wisconsin: Mary LEIDENBERG ************************************************************************ Submitted by Kathy Grace, February 2005 © All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************************************ Winneconne Local February 21, 1918 p.1 Passes to Reward Mrs. Julius Leidenberg passed away at her home in this city on Friday morning, Feb. 28th, at 6 o'clock after being sick nearly a year. Mrs. Mary Leidenberg was born in Hartford, Wis., on Sept. 27th, 1861, and was the daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Wm. D. Ames. Her mother died when she was about two years of age, and her father married again after few years. She received her education in Appleton and graduated from Lawrence University in 1884. She taught a few years and was married to Julius Leidenberg in Appleton on August 30th, 1888. Mr. Leidenberg taught school at Winneconne for a year or so and for the past twenty-five years they have lived in Eau Claire and Shawano, having lived in this city for seventeen years. Mrs. Leidenberg was assistant in the high school when Mr. Leidenberg was principal and for several years was principal of the Lincoln school, and for a few years has taught the seventh grade. She had to give up her work over a year ago on account of her health and improved considerable after her operation and commenced her duties in the school last September, but was compelled to give up two months later, when she failed gradually until the end came peacefully on Friday. Mrs. Leidenberg was a splendid teacher and all of her pupils like her very much. She took a deep interest in their work and they all progressed under her charge. She was a woman of high ideals and lovely character. She was like by all who knew her and her many friends were saddened to learn of her death. Besides her husband, she leaves on brother, J.W.T. Ames of Monroe, and three sisters, Mrs. A.S. Hanson and Miss Alberta Ames of Honolulu, and Miss Edith Ames of Appleton, the later being here to attend the funeral, also Mrs. E.E. Rams dell of Marion, Mrs. Alma Hillman of Winneconne, Miss Elizabeth Miller of Chicago, John C. Leis of Milwaukee and Ernest Bailey of Madison. The funeral was held at her home Sunday afternoon at three o'clock, Rev. McGreaham officiating. The floral offerings were many and beautiful. Members of the Eastern Star attended in a body, as Mrs. Leidenberg had been a member for a number of years and always took a great interest in the order. The remains were taken to Appleton Monday morning where short services held Rev. Upjohn, former pastor of the Episcopal church here and who boarded with Mr. and Mrs. Leidenberg for two years, officiated at the grave there-- Shawano Advocate. Mr. Leidenberg was a former Winneconne resident and his many friends here extend their sympathy in this hour of bereavement.
