Leidenberg passed away at her home in the town of Poygan, Saturday, May 3. Elizabeth Spies was born in Gundersblurn, Germany, on Sept. 29, 1829. She was the second of a family of twelve children. When Elizabeth was 20 years of age her parents sold their farm in Germany and with their eight children then living they immigrated to the United States, sailing from France March 11, 1850, and arriving at New York about April 28. They continued their journey by boat to Buffalo, thence by train to Milwaukee. At Milwaukee the father was taken sick, and Elizabeth with several of the other children came on to Winneconne by team. They were met by Fred Dahlem, who cared for them until the father was able to join them. Mr. Spies took up a homestead in Poygan on what is now known as the Quigley farm, here the family lived until 1861. In 1851 Elizabeth married John Herbst, who immigrated to America from Germany in 1849. He took up a homestead upon which Mrs. Herbst has since lived with the exception of four years of widowhood. A son and daughter were born during their union. The son passed away in '53 and the daughter and husband in '54. During the four years of her widowhood Mrs. Herbst lived at Fond du Lac. On May 6, 1858 she was married to Wm. Leidenberg, making their home on the Herbst claim, where they lived until Mr. Leidenberg's death, March 21, 1901. Three children were born them Julius, Delia of Chicago, and Dora, now Mrs. Ed Quigley. Mrs. Leidenberg lived alone at her home until Oct. 1912. The funeral was held from the Baptist church, Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock. Rev. Codd officiating.
