Neenah - John Mannion, 72, former resident of this city, passed away recently at Borges hospital, Kalamazoo, Mich., according to information received here. Mr. Mannion was superintendent of the Badger-Globe mill of the Kimberly-Clark corporation for several years during his term of residence here. With his family he went to Kalamazoo about 15 years ago where he continued to follow the trade of paper maker. His death occurred on his 72nd birthday. Funeral services and burial took place in the Michigan city." *************** Obituary in Kalamazoo Gazette, May 10, 1931: "JOHN MANNION TO BE BURIED MAY 12. Illness of Year Fatal to Former Employee of Hawthorne Mill. John Mannion, 1105 Egleston avenue, died at 11:30 Saturday night at Borgess hospital. He had been ill for about one year and if he had lived one-half hour longer he would have reached his 72nd birthday. Mr. Mannion was born in Ireland, coming to this country with his parents when just one year of age. He had lived in Nashville, Tenn., Neenah Wis., Louisville, Ky., and in Kalamazoo for the last 20 years. Besides his widow, Bertha, the deceased leaves seven sons, Martin, Erie, Pa.; George, Chicago; John, Aberdeen, Wash.; Walter, Louisville, Ky.; and Godfrey, William, and Edward, all of Kalamazoo; one brother, Martin, Kalamazoo; a sister, Mrs. Kate Harrison, Chicago; and 11 grandchildren. Mr. Mannion was a well known paper maker, having worked at this trade since he was 14 years of age until he retired at the age of 69. He was employed at the Hawthorne Paper Mills, having been there 14 years. He was a member of St. Augustine church and the Holy Name Society. Funeral services will be held at 9 Tuesday morning at St. Joseph's church with burial in Mount Olivet cemetery." Additional Comments: John MANNION was born in Ireland May 10, 1859. As a young child, he and his brother, Martin, immigrated to the US with their parents Michael MANNION and Catherine KELLY. They initially settled in Nashville, TN (their sister Katie was born in Tennessee). John wed Bertha HENNING in Louisville, KY on January 25, 1882. Shortly thereafter (their oldest son was born was born in Appleton, WI in Dec 1882), John and Bertha moved to Wisconsin and settled in Neenah where they raised their seven sons (most who were born in Neenah): Martin "Mart" D.; George T.; John "Jake" Cornelius; William C.; Godrey "Fritz" Thomas; Edward Charles; and Walter E. They resided on the southwest corner of Commercial Ave and High. Most of the MANNIONs were involved in the paper making business. John was the superintendent of the Badger-Globe mill of the Kimberly-Clark Company. John's brother Martin MANNION (also a paper maker) and his wife Mary HANDLER also lived in Neenah (Mary's family was from Neenah). All of them eventually moved out of Wisconsin. In 1911, John and Bertha moved to Kalamazoo, MI for another paper mill position. Martin and Mary MANNION moved to Kalamazoo as did John's sons, William, Godfrey, and Edward.
