James McNair, an old resident of the city and formerly a prosperous lumberman, died at eight o'clock this morning after a short illness with cancer of the stomach at the residence of Thomas Lett, 242 West Algoma street. He had not been in good health for a long period, but was not compelled to take to his bed until last Saturday, when he was taken with a final attack of the malady from which he expired This morning. Mr. McNair came here in the early days of the city. He was seventy years of age, and had pursued various occupations through his life. When the city was young, he worked in the lumber mills and acquired large holdings in the local lumbering industry, meeting, however, with reverses that swept away a comfortable fortune. He had been prominent in municipal politics, having been at one time alderman of the Fifth ward, and he had also held positions in the state capitol at Madison. For the last eight years he had made his home in Oshkosh, at the Lett residence. He had been a member of the Knights of Pythias, in Oshkosh lodge no. 25. There are surviving three daughters, all of whom are married. They live in Milwaukee, Beloit and Waupun respectively. There is also a son, William McNair of Racine, who is expected to arrive in the city this evening to complete arrangements for the funeral. The services probably will be held at the residence Thursday afternoon at two o'clock.
