L. Newton Pioneer Resident Succumbs to Heart Disease at Age of Seventy-Seven W. L. Newton, a pioneer resident of this city, died Saturday evening at seven o'clock at his home, 78 Franklin avenue, having declined for the past seven years with heart disease. Deceased was highly esteemed. He was seventy-seven years of age and was born on a farm near Oberlin, O. His education was received in Oberlin college. He came to Oshkosh in the pioneer days and from here went to Oconto where he engaged for many years in a general mercantile business. He was agent for the American Express company and at one time was associated with the Harts in the steamboat business on Green bay. He had docks and a warehouse at Oconto while engaged in the steamboat business. He located in this city about thirty years ago. In recent years he was manager of the Hubbard farm, near this city, and properties here. Mr. Newton is survived by his wife , Mrs. Kate Newton, a son, Fred L. Newton of this city; two daughters, Mrs. Andrew Jackson of Oconto, Wis., and Mrs. E. H. Hubbard of Mobile, Ala, also a sister, Mrs. Maria Steppe of Boone, Ia., and a stepson, Minden Maynard of this city. The funeral will take place Tuesday afternoon with services at the residence, Rev. Edward H. Smith of the First Congregational church officiating.
