Obituary: Winnebago County, Wisconsin: Sarah (Morris) OWENS ************************************************************************ Submitted by Kathy Grace, July 2004 © All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************************************ Daily Northwestern April 3, 1893 Death of Mrs. Evan Owens Another Old Resident Gone- Sad Sequel to a Golden Wedding On Sunday morning at 1:55 o'clock occurred the death of Mrs. Evan Owens at the old homestead in the town of Algoma, of neuralgia of the heart, superinduced by a second stroke of paralysis. Mrs. Owens, whose maiden name was Sarah Morris, was born in Montgomeryshire, North Wales, January 29, 1819. She married Mr. Owens January 11, 1843, and in 1849 they came to America, and in 1850 settled in this county, where they have ever since lived. They have had eleven children, and the death of the mother is the first that has ever occurred in the family. On January 11 last Mr. and Mrs. Owens celebrated their golden wedding. It was a most glorious reunion and every one of their eleven children were present, with grandchildren and other family relations, making nearly fifty in all that sat down to the family reunion dinner. A full account of this memorable golden wedding celebration and family reunion was published in this paper at the time. A pathetic incident of that occasion is now recalled by the death of the aged mother. During the evening the eleven children, in a circle around the piano, sang their mother's favorite song, "God be with Us Till We Meet Again." The mother looked on with tears filling her eyes and exclaimed when the song was finished, "No, it will not be; we will never all meet again." The prediction proved only too true. The children scattered to their far away homes only to be summoned now, two months and a half later, by their mother's death, and the first link in the family chain is broken. The funeral will be held on Wednesday at ten o'clock. The funeral services will be conducted by Revs. H. Stone Richardson, David Davies and A. D. Adams, the same who were present and took part in the celebration of the golden wedding in January. Six of the stalwart sons of the deceased will act as pall bearers. Deceased was a woman of rare wifely and motherly instincts, and there existed an attachment between her and her grown up children and husband that was a beautiful example of perfect family ties. Her death will be mourned by a wide circle of friends and acquaintances.
