Obituary: Winnebago County, Wisconsin: Emma POMMERENING ************************************************************************ Submitted by Kathy Grace, 12 June 2004 © All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************************************ Daily Northwestern February 16, 1890 Drowned While Sailing Miss Emma Pommerening, a Young Girl, Meets Death in Lake Winnebago Yesterday Miss Emma Pommerening was drowned in Lake Winnebago yesterday afternoon. In company with her brother and uncle, Fred Shirind, of Eau Claire, she had rented a small sail boat at Hellard's boat house at the foot of Merritt street. They sailed almost directly out in the lake fully two miles. They were sailing before the wind and in attempting to come about they turned the wrong way and the boat went over. The wind was blowing from the west and so was a great deal stronger than it seemed on the shore. The two men pulled the girl out of the water twice but both times she fell back and they were too exhausted to help her any more. The men hung to the boat for nearly an hour. Finally the Jessie, a steam yacht, sighted them, waiving [sic] their hats, and went to their rescue. They were exhausted and benumbed with the cold and absolutley helpless. The body of the girl was found on the sail, tangled in the rigging. It is supposed that she was caught when the boat capsided, which prevented her being saved. The Jessie took the entire party on board and towed the boat in. The body was laid in the boat house, where it was viewed by the coronor. The girl is the daughter of F.C. Pommerening, living at 20 Oak street. She is fifteen years old and has been working at Sterling's dressmaking establishment. Miss Pommerening is high spoken of by her employers and by those who have been working with her. Dr. Nintzel was summoned late in the afternoon, and although he worked upon the body for some time it was useless as life was already extinct. Six young girls acted as pall bearers. The remains were interred at Riverside.
