Obituary: Winnebago County, Wisconsin: Rome ROMME ************************************************************************ Submitted by Kathy Grace, October 2004 © All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************************************ Winneconne Local Oct. 10, 1912 p.1 Farmer Hangs Self Rome Romme, aged forty-eight years, a well-known and prosperous farmer, who resided three miles northwest of Winchester, Wi., committed suicide by hanging some time Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning, of last week. His body was found yesterday suspended from a rope attached to a hay fork track in the barn. Despondency, caused partially by the serious physical condition of his wife, developed the hallucination that he was being mistreated generally by people. District Attorney D.E. McDonald investigated the case yesterday afternoon and decided that there was nothing for a corner's inquest to probe. Romme was in this city Friday and complained to Mr. McDonald that a number of people were trespassing upon his property. He said they were hunting there for the purpose of annoying him. When he retired Tuesday night, Romme was in a melancholy mood, but he didn't say or do anything which indicated that he intended to take his life. The suicide was planned, however, with deliberation, and certainty. In order to secure the necessary fall after the noose had been adjusted about his neck, Romme climbed up a ladder leading to the hay-loft and jumped off. Death was due to strangulation. After the body was cut down yesterday, Dr. Hendricksen of Larsen was called, but Romme had been dead for hours. Deceased had lived for a number of years on the farm where he killed himself. He left an estate valued at approximately $10,000. Mrs. Romme is a victim of tuberculosis.-- Northwestern.
