Obituary: Winnebago County, Wisconsin: Carrie (Grinnell) RUSSELL ************************************************************************ Submitted by Kathy Grace, July 2004 © All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************************************ Daily Northwestern February 23, 1891 Death at Neenah Mrs. John B. Russell No More The Wife of the Well Known Hotel Man Dies about Eleven O'Clock Sunday Night. Neenah, Wis., Feb. 23- Mrs. John B. Russell died here last evening at eleven o'clock. In the death of Mrs. Russell, Neenah loses one of the kindliest ladies. She was in every way an estimable woman but for several years has been a constant sufferer from the growth of a cancer. During the past summer she submitted to an operation which, however, proved only partially successful and slowly but surely hastened the growth of the disease. The immediate cause of the dissolution was an attack of peritonitis which in the weakened condition of her physical system forced the combat with the grim destroyer upon her. It was an unequal combat and death came as sudden as unexpected. Ultimately the cancerous growth must have ended fatally, but the sudden termination had been unlooked for for many many months. The shock to Mr. Russell was a terrible one. For many years an invalid, the dreadful ordeal has already left its mark and it is only by the supreme exertion of self control that he can command his voice in speech as the tears flow slowly down his checks. Mrs. Russell's maiden name was Carrie Grinnell. She was a native of Tompkins county, New York and was born in 1835. Mr. Russell to whom she was married in 1874, was her second husband as was she his second wife. She came to Wisconsin in 1860, fourteen years previous to her second marriage. By this marriage she leaves no children. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at two o'clock from the Russell house. The Rev. Samuel Joliffe will officiate.
