Obituary: Winnebago County, Wisconsin: Charles SHERBURNE ************************************************************************ Submitted by Kathy Grace, November 2004 © All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************************************ Winneconne Local September 21, 1916 p.1 Nearly everyone in Winneconne and the surrounding country, were grieved Thursday afternoon when news of the death of Charles Sherburne came to their ears. Mr. Sherburne's death was caused by typhoid which he is said to have contracted from the drinking water when at Oshkosh. His daughter Beatrice also became confined to her bed with the same illness, supposed to be from drinking water while on a trip with her father to Oshkosh, but she is said to be quite well to recovery. Mr. Sherburne was fifty-nine years of age and for over forty years has resided at the head of Bay Boom. He was one of the best known hunters and trapper in this part of the country, and over four thousand acres of marsh land for trapping was in his control at which occupation he met with much success. In fact all the boys in the line took off their hats to Charley as he was familiarly called, and muskrats coming into his control were so well cared for the market that his good name spread more and more. Deceased also gained a good reputation as an expert in boat building. As an oar maker his equal was not to be found in the country, ten good, well rounded oars being a common record for him in a days work, his work with the draw shave being excellent. He is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Marie Wells of Grand Rapids, Mrs. Bessie Springer of Fremont, and the Misses Nitanis and Beatrice Sherburne of Bay Boom. There is also one brother, William Sherburne of Fremont and two half brothers, George Kinsman of Chicago and Albert Kinsman of Manawa. The funeral was held Saturday afternoon at 1 o'clock from the church at Fremont.
