Deceased was born at Schleisingerville and was married August 22, 1869, being a resident of Winneconne forty-nine years. Since the death of her husband she stayed nights with her daughter, Mrs. W.C. Mayer. Toward supper time the dear woman went to her home and apparently was kindling her fire when she died. When the hour got to eight Mrs. Mayer wondered where her mother was; that it was time she had returned for the evening. Investigation was made and upon arrival at the house the shock presented itself to her daughter. Dr. Canavan was called and pronounced her dead, the angel of mystery having crept to her hours earlier. She leaves to mourn her loss Mrs. W. C. Mayer of Winneconne and Mrs. E.E. Mader of Eau Claire, and grandchildren, Carmon, Viola, and Helen. Funeral services for the late Mrs. John Smith were held Monday afternoon with services from the late residence at 1:30 o'clock and at 2:00 o;clock from the Baptist church. Rev. F.C. Codd, pastor of the church, officiated. There was a large attendance of relatives and friends and there were many beautiful floral tributes which expressed the high esteem in which the deceased was held. Those acting as pall bearers were: Christ Bersch, Fred Klaus, Sr., John Schneider, C.A. Russell, Peter Yost and Dr. A.L. Drews. Interment was in the village cemetery.
