For a week past he has been ill with a cold, but Saturday he was much better. Sunday morning he got up and built the fire the same as usual and felt well all the forenoon, but about noon he had a sinking spell and at five o'clock died of heart failure. After he revived from the sinking spell he was conscious to the last, and seemed to die without any fear or regret. Mr. Standen was born in Dover, Kent county, England, the son of Joseph and Sarah Standen, and one of fourteen children. Of all the children he was the last to survive and nearly all died at a remarkably old age, several numbering more than eighty. His age was seventy-two last August. At the age of eighteen he left home for Australia and after spending several years in Australia and by way of the Pacific ocean making a tour of the world he returned to England. He had not been home but a short time when he left for America and after visiting a short time in New England he settled on a large farm in Illinois. There he married his present wife who was then Mrs. Arvila G. Mercle. After twenty-five years spent in Illinois they removed to Warrensburg, Johnson county, Missouri, where they lived fourteen years. From Missouri they removed to this city in 1883 and have lived here to the present time. They have had three children, one died when thirteen months old, a son Kennet died in Missouri at the age of twenty-five, and they have one daughter living in Johnson county, Missouri, Mrs. Sarah Marker. For several years past Mr. Standen has been employed in the office of the Menasha Wood Split Pulley company. Both he and Mrs. Standen were devout christians and regular attendants of the Methodist church. He leaves a house and lot on Broad street, and a sum of money, which managed economically, will take care of Mrs. Standen during her remaining years. All through life Mr. Standen has been strictly honest, being one of those men who would rather suffer wrong than do wrong. The funeral will be held from the Methodist church at half past one Tuesday afternoon, Rev. W. W. Warner officiating, assisted by Rev. Wm. Woodmansee.
