Vining Well Known Resident of the Town of Neenah Succumbs to Paralysis Gorman P. Vining, a pioneer of the town of Neenah, died Saturday night at his home of paralysis. The funeral will be held on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Mr. Vining was born in Medford, Mass., in 1819, and consequently he was 76 years old at the time of his death. In his boyhood days he was a schoolmate of Gen. Benjamin F. Butler. In 1845 he came to Wisconsin. He first examined the country around Fond du Lac, but on account of its flatness he decided to locate elsewhere. Hearing of Winnebago Rapids, now Neenah, he started for the place, reaching there in August, 1845. The first winter thereafter he was engaged with George Harlow in running the old government mill. About this time he obtained from the government the land upon which he lived and had his home to the time of his death. Mr. Vining was a man of wide reading and keen intelligence. He held many town offices, and was for many years a member of the county board, where he proved himself to be a most faithful servant of the people. He was married twice. His first wife was a sister of Henry E. Huxley, at present a supervisor, and his second wife, who still survives, is a cousin of the first. He leaves five children, William Vining, who lives in Colorado; Mrs. Sorley, who lives at Weyauwega; Byron Vining, who lives at Miss Fannie and Gorham P. Vining at home.
