High Ercall Letters - c 1850-1870. Transcribed by Roberta's mother, contributed by Roberta Bailey : Family letters from England to a family who lived in Wood County, WI dating from the 1850's to the 1870's. Two brothers, Thomas & John Davies, came to America leaving their parents & siblings in England. Some of these letters are complete with the mispellings & some have been cleaned up. Roberta's mother started transcribing them several years ago but passed away before finishing so Roberta picked up where she left off. In all it looks like there are 16. March 26th, 1860 Dear brother Thomas, I feel it a pleasure in writing to you as it is the first time and I hope you will please to excuse my bad hand. I write to tell you that my mother is better then she has been. She has suffered a great deal this winter with her feet and my father with the rhumitsm but they bless God that they are as they are in their old age though God slays us we will trust in him. We have a very severe winter this time. It began on the 10th of October and it as been very severe ever since. It as spoiled all the weeds for the poor cattle and there is not a thing in our garden at the present time of green vegetables. If money is scarse in your country it is the same here for everything is so dear. Beef is from 6 pence to 7 ½ pence per pound. My mother has sold a very small pig for five pounds and she is going to put the money up to support them when they grow old without troubling their children. We have not much news to tell you but we have sent you a newspaper and then it will tell you more than we are able to write and we hope you will have it. Dear Sister, My Mother says when you write again you must send her a great deal of news and being in that country please send my mother word wether you was born in that country and what friends you have in that country and how your mother is. My mother says it is very unlikely she shall ever see you or your friends being such a great way off but you have the same God to fly too as we have here. Keep close to him and if we dot not meet here on earth I hope we shall all meet in heaven. I never do forget to pray for you nor for my dear Dad. Give my love to my neese and I will come and see her some day when I grow old enough. I must conclude with my fathers and mothers love to you and my brothers and – sisters kind love to you.
