High Ercall Letters - c 1850-1870. Transcribed by Roberta's mother, contributed by Roberta Bailey : Family letters from England to a family who lived in Wood County, WI dating from the 1850's to the 1870's. Two brothers, Thomas & John Davies, came to America leaving their parents & siblings in England. Some of these letters are complete with the mispellings & some have been cleaned up. Roberta's mother started transcribing them several years ago but passed away before finishing so Roberta picked up where she left off. In all it looks like there are 16. October 7, 1862 Dier brother and sister, I now take the pleasure of writing a few lines to you hoping that this will find you in good ealth as we ar at present. Thank you for it. Dier brother am sorry to tell you that though we have all bee swell my wife as been verry unwell. She as been in the asylum for 10 weaks but thank God that she is well at present and we have one son and that as been at home ------------ I am --- at present but my work his at –ettey on the railway. Dier brotherthe have done harvest about hear but it as bee verry last ---- on --- the --- taken half the garden of father and the ---- now for mother as ---- for market. I am afraid that the war is making bad ---- --- you by what wee hear. I --- papears if as caused every thing to be verry bad for we have noting to ----- ---. the Coten----- being Dear ----- being bad but ----- ---- all this for better and therough Crist we shall have it to. I now conclude with my Love to you all. Your aff Brother Joseph Davies My Dear Children I hear by this time that the was is coming very near you and that we see in the papers there has been a severe battle in Maryland. How far is that from you? We hope none of you will have to go. We hope that it will soon come to an end for there are thousands in England now in the bottom manufacturing district wanting bread. They are having collections in all the churchs and chapels for them. The price of wheat barley and all other produce is about the same as when we sent before. The family that Esther lived with are gone to live at Brighton below London and Esther is gone with them and Andrew is gone to live in Berkshire near London so we are scattered about. We have had a splendid harvest wheather the disease has began to take the potatoes. Your father with myself give our love to you all hoping this will find you all quite well as I am glad to say leaves us both at present.
