High Ercall Letters - c 1850-1870. Transcribed by Roberta's mother, contributed by Roberta Bailey : Family letters from England to a family who lived in Wood County, WI dating from the 1850's to the 1870's. Two brothers, Thomas & John Davies, came to America leaving their parents & siblings in England. Some of these letters are complete with the mispellings & some have been cleaned up. Roberta's mother started transcribing them several years ago but passed away before finishing so Roberta picked up where she left off. In all it looks like there are 16. High Ercall Wellington Salop My Dear Brothers and Sisters We are very thankful to say that we received your kind letters and glad to hear that you were quite well and we are all enjoying the same blessing at present though old age is drawing near and we must expect infirmities for they are carrying off our neighbors very fast and we shall have to go after them. We have had a very bad summer our trees were very well set but the Lord thought proper to send a blight across so that we had nothing kind of quantity of walnuts everywhere but good for nothing and the apples are very small and we have had a very bad year of fruit so that we have had nothing to sell out of the garden this year besides those nice pares owing to the blight and so much rain and the turnips are the same but the harvest we got pretty well about us but the largest bulk will never be got but it yields very well and a very bad year of potatoes and by the measure not a strike to ride the vicar's wife of this parish has now laid the foundation stone of a new school for the poor of this parish. Dear brother's I am at the present time at the grocer's shop at High Ercall but not tied yet and my two oldest brothers are at the home and my sisters at the same place still and Andrew is still at the same place but dn't be offended at me not calling you the oldest brothers but we have not forgot you yet we have not seen the hair of you but rather seen the faces. Dear Permele you said you had not much time to write in the last letter but please answer this letter soon and send all the particulars about that country. Please to send us word whether you received the newspapers that we sent you. I conclude with all our kind love to you all and expect the same from your borther. Peter LAVIES Wishing you all a happy new year. Transcribed by Roberta Bailey Edited by "MAK" (c) Copyright 2003 Roberta Bailey . All Rights Reserved.
