June 5, 1852 Joseph Johnson Esquire, Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia: To all to whom these presents shall come Greetings: Know YE, That in conformity with a survey made on the thirtieth day of May, one thousand eight hundred and fifty one by Virtue of Land Office Treasury Warrant No.19322 there is granted by the Commonwealth, untoJohn Phares a certain Tract or Parcel of Land containing thirty nine acres, lying in Braxton county, on Elk River,& adjoining lands owned by Zachariah Woods and bounded as follows; Beginning at a poplar & birch on the south side of the mountain on the north side of Elk River running thence S19W82 poles to a chestnut oak by the road, S84W21 poles to a white oak, corner to said Woods land and with a line of same N6poles to a beech; corner to same: N77 degrees 82 poles to a poplar, corner to same. N23 E55 poles crossing the river to its South bank to a line of land owned by Andrew McCourt and with the same crossing the river S56 & a half E122 poles to the beginning,with its appurtenances. TO HAVE AND TO HOLD the said Tract or Parcel of Land, with its appurtenances, to the said John Phares and his heirs forever. In witness whereof the said, Joseph Johnson, Esquire, Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, hath hereunto set his hand and caused the Lesser Seal of the said Commonwealth to be affixed, at Richmond, on the first day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty two, and of the Commonwealth, the seventy sixth.
