James Bennett March 13, 1850 John b. Floyd, Esquire, Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia: To all to whom these presents shall come Greeting : Know Ye, that in conformity with a survey made on the twenty fourth day of January, One Thousand Eight hundred and Forty nine, by virtue of Land Office Treasury Warrants nos 16,364-16,838 there is hereby Granted by said Commonwealth unto Samuel Tharp, a certain parcel or tract of land, containing One Hundred and twenty five acres, lying and being in the County of Braxton; on Elk River above Zachariah Woods and bounded as follows, viz : Beginning at a beech and chestnut oak on the north side of Elk River below the improvement said Samuel Tharp now lives on, running S 3o degrees, E 94 Poles to a dogwood and birch S 25 degrees W45 Poles to a double chestnut tree and beech on the bank of the river; thence down the river 55degrees W36 Poles to a poplar on the bank of the river;thence down the river N16 degrees W 80 poles to a sassafrass N 88 degrees W crossing the river, 26 Poles to a beech on a point of a ridge S 46 degrees W 106 Poles to a sugar N60 degrees W 60 poles to a cucumber and beech N7degrees W100 Poles to a hickory and spruce on the back of the river. Thence up the river N 74 degrees E 172 Poles to the beginning with its appurtenances. To have to hold the said tract or parcel of land with its appurtenances, to the said Samuel tharp and his heirs forever.In witness whereof; the said John B. Floyd, Esquire, Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, hath hereunto set his hand and caused the Lesser Seal of the Commonwealth to be affixed at Richmond, on the thirty first day of August in the year of Our Lord One Thousand EightHundred and forty nine and of the commonwealth Seventy fourth.
