McCluney, Wellsburgh VA Virginia John Brownlee of Mafhfany in the state of Penna who was a Private in the regiment commanded by Colonel Miles of the Penna line for the term of 18 months. Inscribed on the role of Penn at the rate of 8 Dollars per month, to commence on the 26 of June 1818. Certificate of Pension issued on the 9 of Feb 1820 and sent (?) to Genl Patterson, House of Repe. Arrears to 4th of Sept 1819 114.40 Semi-anl. all’ce ending 4 March 1820 48. 14 mo 9/30 = $162.40. {Revolutionary Claim} {Act 18th March, 1818} Virginia remarks over Continued I, John Brownlee of Washington County in the State of Pennsylvania, do swear by Almighty God the searcher of hearts, that I served in the revolutionary war against the common enemy from the month of April A.D. one thousand seven hundred an seventy six till the month of January one thousand seven hundred and seventy eight. I enlisted in Captain Joseph Irwins Company of Colonel Miles’ regiment, Pennsylvania Riflemen. At the battle of Boyiston Colonel Miles was taken prisoner and our regiment in _________ _________ was reduced to thirty five men. In the ______ succeeding the battle of Princeton the remnants of our regiment which had been somewhat recruited during the winter was consolidated with another an formed was called the Pennsylvania State regiment. The regiment was for some time commanded Colonel Bull, an afterwards by Colonel Mathew (?) Stewart. In this regiment I continued till the expiration of the term of my enlistment and some time after and was honorably discharged at Valley Forge in about the middle of January. A.D. one thousand seven hundred and seventy eight. My discharge, which was burned in my cabbin thirty years ago, was signed "Mathew (?) Stewart Commanding 18th Pennsylvania Regiment." I was present an engaged in the battles of Long Island, White Plains, Taking the Hefsions at Trenton, battle of Trenton and of Princeton, Brandywine and Germantown. I am now an old man, unable to work, in extremely reduced circumstances and need the afsistance of my country for support. I therefore make this declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provisions of the late act of Congrefs entitled "an act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval service of the United States in the revolutionary war." In witnefs whereof I _____ _____ set my hand and seal this twenty sixth day of June A.D. one thousand eight hundred and eighteen. Feb 20 Mar 20 SCHEDULE Pennsylvania Washington County,ss On this twenty eighth day of June 1820, personally appeared in open court, being a court of record for the said county, John Brownlee, aged seventy two years, resident in Donegal Township in said county, who being duly sworn according to law, doth, on his oath declare that he served in the revolutionary war as follows: In the month of Apr 1776 he enlisted in Capt. Joseph Irwins Company Col. Miles regiment attached to the Pennsylvania Line in which corps he served near two years; This deponit further saith that on the 26th day of June, 1818 he made and forwarded to the war Department a particular declaration of his Services in consequence he has received a pension certificate thereof No. 164620. And I do solemnly Swear that I was a resident citizen of the United States, on the 18th day of March, 1818; and that I have not, since that time, by gift, sale, or in any manner, disposed of my property, or any part thereof, with intent thereby so to diminish it as to bring myself within the provisions of an act of congress, entitled "An act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval service of the United States, in the revolutionary war," passed on the 18th day of March, 1818; and that I have not, nor has any person in trust for me, any property, or securities, contracts, or debts, due to me; nor have I any income other that what is contained in the schedule hereto annexed, and by me subscribed. 1 Mare (black) valued at $8.00. John (his mark) Brownlee This deponent has followed the Occupation of a Farmer, but from his advanced age is now no longer capable to pursue it, his family consists of himself and a daughter thirty years of age unmarried. Washington County I, William Sample Prothonary of the Court of Common Pleas for said County, do hereby certify, that the foregoing Affidavit and the schedule thereto annexed, are truly copied from the record of the said court; and I do further certify that it is the opinion of the said court that the total amount of value of the property exhibited in aforesaid schedule is Thirty four dollars and ----- cents. Oct 9, 1824 Sir Your letter, returning John Brownlee’s application to be changed from the Penna pension list to that of Virginia was received; and enclosed is the clerks certificate, corrected agreeably to your instructions. Edwards, Esq. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Washington County Pennsylvania Before me William McClain, one of the Justices of the Peace in and for said county personally came John Marshall, and having made oath according to law, saith, that when a Captain in the revolutionary war, early in the year of 76, near Marcushook (?) on the Delaware he became personally acquainted with John Brownlee, a private soldier in Capt. Joseph Irwins Company of the 2nd Batalion Riflemen in what was called a State Reg. Commanded by Col. Samuel Miles, that the said Brownlee served in the same Batalion with this deponent during the term for which he enlisted, viz. One year and eight months when he was with others discharged at the Vally Forge – that said John was frequently under his particular command scouting and otherwise knew him to be in the battle of Long Island - at White Plains - taking of the Hefsions at Trenton - Battle of do_ Prince) Princeton and at the Brandywine. A good soldier at all those places. This deponent further saith that he has many years resided in this county so ____ said John Brownlee, that he knows him to be in indigent circumstances, aged and infirm. - Palsyed so as not to be able by any means to work for a living - and in his opinion justly intitled to the benefit of the Act of Congrefs making provision for old Revolutionary Officers and Soldiers - and fur saith not. James Allison ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- State of Virginia County of Brooke Be it known that before the subscriber one of the Justices of the Peace, in and for the county aforesaid, personally appeared General John Connell of the said county and that, who after having been duly sworn according to law, depsoeth and saith that he is well acquainted with the within named John Brownlee, and that this deponent verily beleaves the said John Brownlee to be the identical John Brownlee he represents himself to be, and whose name is on the pension Roll of the United States as a revolutionary pensioner. State of Virginia County of Brooke On this fourth day of September 1827 before me, the subscriber, as Justice of the Peace for the said county of Brooke, personally appeared John Brownlee, who on his oath, declares that he is the same person who formerly belonged to the company commanded by Captain James Carnaghen in the regiment commanded by Col. Walter Stewart in the service of the United States; that his name has been placed on the pension Role of the State of Pennsylvania, from whence he has lately removed, that he now resides in the house of his son, in the County of Brooke and State of Virginia where he intends to remain, and wishes his pension to be there payable in future and that his reasons for removing to the State of Virginia to live and die with his children. Madam: I have to advise you, that the Revolutionary War records of this Bureau fail to afford information in regard to Thomas Brownlee, or in regard to Captain Walter Denny and his widow Mary described by you. The pension claim of said Mary Denny was made to the State of Pennsylvania and not to the United States, hence there are no papers in this Bureau relative thereto. If you desire photostat copies of the papers in the following Revolutionary War pension claims, the same will be furnished at the rate of fifteen cents a page, with twenty-five cents extra in each claim, for certification, if that is desired. The proper amount should be forwarded to this Bureau by money order, or certified check drawn to the order of the Secretary of the Interior, (not to the order of the Commissioner of Pensions). In the pension claim, W. 12385 of James Brownlee, or Burnley and his widow Mary, the number of pages to be copied is ten. In the pension claim, S. 39238 of John Brownlee, the number of pages to be copied is four.
