Died on Fri. the 3rd inst of consumption, Mrs. Maria, daughter of James PALMER of this county and wife of Wm. E. ARMSTRONG of Flemingsburg, Ky. Wellsburg Weekly Herald 17 Oct. 1856. Died at Benwood Station, Marshall Co., Va., July 28 1861, Lieutenant George M. BAILEY of Co. K 2nd Va Regiment. Wellsburg Herald 2 Aug 1861. Died: Augustine Bickerstaff, the oldest inhabitant of Steubenville on Mon the 15th - aged 97 years. Wellsburg Weekly Herald 20 Feb 1857. Peter, son of Peter BLANKINSOP, of this town, was drowned while boating on the river on the evening of Fri the 2nd inst - about 10 years of age. Wellsburg Herald 9 Aug 1861. Died Apr. 3 1847 (sic), Mary E., wife of B.F. BRANNON of Cincinnatti and daughter of the late Rev. Dr. Joseph DODDRIDGE of Wellsburg, Va aged 36 years. Married in Circleville, Ohio in Oct. 1845 by the Rev. James B. Britton and removed to this city in 1848. Wellsburg Weekly Herald 1 May 1857. Died on the 17 Oct 1855 in the city of Memphis, Tenn., of yellow fever, after an illness of 5 days, Mr. John CARLE, formerly of this place. Left Brooke Co. about a year ago. Wellsburg Weekly Herald 8 Nov 1855. On Thurs., the 9th inst, the youngest son of Mr. David CARTER of the Planter's Hotel in this place, was almost instantly killed by being run over by a four horse wagon. Wellsburg Weekly Herald 16 Nov 1855 John, son of Mr. Samuel CARTER of this county, died on the 2nd inst from injuries received by falling into a pot of boiling water, 18 days previous. Died on Sunday Jan 15th of Lung Fever, Franklin, only son of J.F.CHAMBERS, aged 6 years, 2 mos and 17 days in American Valley, Plumas Co., Calif. Wellburg Weekly Herald 9 Mar 1860. Died on the 8th inst. At the residence of Mr. W.F.M. ARNY near Bloomington, Ill, Mr. Elisha P. CRAFT of Bethany, Brooke Co., Va. Wellsburg Weekly Herald 22 Sept 1854. Died at his camp, Honey Lake, Utah Territory, May 25, from wounds inflicted by an Indian with a bow and arrow, Charles W. CRAWFORD, youngest son of Thomas CRAWFORD, formerly a resident of Buffalo Creek, Brooke CO. in the 25th year of his age. Wellsburg Herald 20 Aug 1858. Died at his residence in Washington Co., Texas on the 1st of April last, after a short illness of 6 days, Mr. Joseph W. CRAWFORD, formerly of this county, in the 42nd year of his age, leaving a wife and three children. The deceased was the son of Thomas CRAWFORD of this co, born near Bethany. He completed the study of his profession, also near this place, after which in 1833 or 34, he left for the west where his father had settled. Neither of the two being satisfied, in '36 they started farther west and south and settled in southwestern Missouri, near the Arkansas line. The doctor, not yet satisfied, sometime in the year of '37, he started for Texas in the company with others, where he settled down in the practice of his profession until his death. Wellsburg Weekly Herald 29 June 1855. L. DEAN died this morning at the residence of Mr. James BROWN of this vicinity. Mr. DEAN formerly of the state of New York, had recently had a partial residence near W. Middletown, Washington CO., Pa. On beginning a tour to the west, he took sick and died after a few days. DENEHOO of New Manchester, Hancock Co, lost another child - a little girl aged about 4 years - of diphtheria this week, making the 3rd bereavement of this nature within a short period and leaving him one child surviving. DONIPHAN, a student of Bethany College was drowned on Tues eve. Last in Buffalo Creek....he was a son of Col. Died of cholera a few miles above Louisville on the 16th Oct, Hugh GREEN formerly of this vicinity - on his way to New Orleans. Wellsburg Gazette 26 Oct 1832. Died on the 17th inst., Nicholas HARRIS, aged 88 years. (Long obituary which says nothing about family but he was a slave owned by Charles PRATHER, Sr., one of the original proprietors of Wellsburg.) Died on the 31st day of May at the Eastern Virginia Lunatic Asylum, Williamsburg, of disease of the heart, Mr. John JEFFERS, son of John JEFFERS of this place, in the 30th year of his age. Drowned in his flume on Sidney Gulch, near Weaverville, Trinity Co., Calif on the 11th Feb, Seth Clark JONES, a native of Brooke Co., Va and formerly of this city, age 37 years.....from Pittsburgh Chronicle - The subject of the above notice was a grandson of the late Seth CLARK of Brooke Co. He left home in company with a number of persons from Steubenville, in the spring of 1859 on the James Millengar, for the overland route to California, where he has ever since resided. Wellsburg Herald 5 Apr 1861. Died in Chillicothe, Ohio, Feb 27th 1856, Col Robert LARIMER, consort of Susan A., daughter of the late Rev. Dr. J. DODDRIDGE, of Wellsburg, Va. Wellsburg Weekly Herald 16 May 1856 Died: Mr. Wm. LEWELLYN, for the last 24 years foreman in the Harb... office at Bethany, a much respected citizen died on Sat. the 6th inst., very suddenly of disease of the heart. He was a native of Wales, is said to have been at the Battle of Waterloo and to have traveled extensively over Europe and America, and was undoubtedly a man of considerability and acquirement. Wellsburg Herald 11 June 1858. Died at the residence of his father who recently removed from Brooke Co to the vicinity of Clayton, Adams Co., Illinois, of diarrhea, James LOGUE, aged 9 years 8 mos. Wellsburg Weekly Herald 27 April 1855. Died: Philip LUCAS Sr. was born in Baltimore Co., Md on the 12th day of May 1779. His father was the Rev. Thomas LUCAS, a pioneer minister in the M.E. Church. In 1799 Philip LUCAS removed to Brooke Co. and was apprenticed to Samuel LEE, a cooper. In 1802 he married Miss Elizabeth Cunningham and at once permanently located himself on Pierce's Run, in this county, where he remained until his death. Wife died 24 Sept 1850. He died 12 June 1854. During the last 6 years, he lived with and was cared for by the family of his son-in-law, Mr. Wm. E. GREEN. Buried in Franklin graveyard beside his wife. Had 11 children, nine of whom are still living. Wellsburg Weekly Herald 16 June 1854. Felix MAGEE of this town, has, during the prevalence of diphtheria, buried his wife and three children, being his entire family. One of the latter died still- born, the other two of diphtheria, his wife of exhaustion. Wellsburg Herald 3 Aug 1860. Died: on the 27th Sept on his way home from Calif., Mr. J.D. McCARTY, a citizen of Hancock Co., Va. A member of Brooke Lodge #28 I.O.O.F. (Memorium signed by W.D. TORREYSON.) Wellsburg Weekly Herald 8 Nov 1855. Died in Lexington, Mo. on Mon, Mar 2, Mr. Robert P. McCLUNEY in the 4(4?) Year of his age. Son of Major John McCLUNEY (an officer in the War of 1812) and removed from Washington Co., Pa to this county in the year 1844. The deceased leaves an aged father and several brothers and sisters, residents of this state. - from Lexington, Mo. Expositor. Wellsburg Weekly Herald 17 Apr 1857. Died: Capt William M'CLUNEY was born in the city of Belfast, Ireland on the 5 of April 1770 and died on the 5th of April 1856 having attained the advanced age of 86 years....married Jane, daughter of Col. MARSHALL, who deceased about 20 years' since. Died at the residence of his son James McCLUNEY, Esq. in Wheeling and is buried by the side of his wife and only daughter. Wellsburg Weekly Herald 11 April 1856. Died: Mrs. Sarah M'COWN, consort of Andrew M'COWN, Sen. Departed this life on Fri the 22 inst in the 85 year of her age. Born Oct 1 1770, Lancaster Co., Pa, removed to Washington Co., Pa, thence to this place. She died belonging to the Presbyterian Church and left her aged companion and numerous relations still living to realize the bitterness of bereavement. Wellsburg Weekly Herald 29 Dec 1854. Died 11 Oct 1859 at Centreville, Iowa, John W. M'CREARY, oldest son of Wm. M'CREARY of this county. Wellsburg Herald 6 Jan 1860. Mrs. MOORE, an aged lady residing near New Manchester, Hancock Co. was burned to death on Tues the 11th inst by her clothes taking fire, as we are informed by a gentleman from that vicinity. Died at Charleston, Kanawha Co., Va on 29 April of consumption, Mary PARSONS, consort of Wm. PARSONS, formerly of this town in the 33rd year of her age. Wellsburg Gazette 13 May 1831. Died at Mechanicsburg, Sangamon Co., Ill, on the 12th inst at the residence of her son, John C. PERRY, formerly of this place, Mrs. PERRY (sic), aged 91 years. Mrs. PERRY was one of the first settlers in Western Va having emigrated with her father from Pa at a very early day and spent most of her long life in Wellsburg. Wellsburg Herald 29 Nov 1861. Died at the residence of Col. E.M. MATHEWS, Spring Ridge, Caddo Parish, La. On the 8th of Aug. last, Miss Kate PRATHER, formerly of this place. Wellsburg Herald 20 Sept 1861. Died on Jan 26 (20?) At the residence of his grandfather, Enoch HAYS, of this county, of diphtheria, Clarence Hays PUGH, son of John and Julia PUGH of Ill., aged 3 years, 9 mos. And 26 days. Wellsburg Herald 8 Feb 1861. Died at her residence in M'Donough Co., Ill., Mrs. Nancy PUGH, formerly of Hancock Co., Va, wife of Hugh PUGH, Sr. on the 9th of Aug. 1860 in the 61 year of her age. Wellsburg Herald 17 Aug 1860. The corpse of S.C. PUNTNEY, son of John PUNTNEY of Jefferson Co., Ohio arrived this place on Mon. last from Ottawa, Iowa, where he died on the Thursday preceding, and was buried at the Tent Meeting House with Masonic ceremonies on Tues. He was a young man highly respected and his funeral was one of the largest that has been seen in the neighborhood. Wellsburg Herald 28 Sept 1860. Tribute of respect from Masonic Lodge for Stephen C. PUNTNEY. Wellsburg Herald 5 Oct 1860. Died in Winchester, Franklin Co., Tenn., at the residence of his father-in-law, Samuel RAMSEY, Esq., late editor of the Dandrdge (sic) Herald. Born in Brooke CO., Va, graduated at Union College, N.Y., went to Tenn. in 1853 and settled in Dandridge where he was principal of the male academy some 10 months. Married the daughter of Mr. J. HARRIS of Winchester on Aug 15 1855 and died Nov 14 1856 after a protracted illness of 22 weeks. C.P. Church - sermon by Rev. A.J. Baird. Buried with Masonic Honors. Wellsburg Weekly Herald 16 May 1856. Died on the 20 Dec at Indianola, Warren Co., Iowa of the Typhoid Fever, Washington ROBINSON, aged about 28 years. He was a native of Brooke CO, graduated at Alleghany College, Pa in 1850 and afterwards at the law school at Balston Spa, N.Y. - from Iowa City Reporter. Wellsburg Weekly Herald 26 Jan 1855. Died at New Orleans, La. On Friday evening Nov 19, Mr. Arthur H. SCOTT, son of John SCOTT, formerly of Wellsburg, Va aged 26 years, 6 mos and 24 days. Wellsburg Herald 17 Dec 1858. Died on Wed the 24 Oct at her residence in Barry, Pike Co., Ill of cramp cholic, Mrs. Mary Ann SELBY, daughter of George and Catherine ORAM of Brooke CO., Va in the 26 year of her age. Died on the evening of the 13th April last at Weaverville, Trinity So., Calif of disease of the heart, Wm. STEWART, Esq., formerly of Brooke Co Va in the 57 year of his age. Wellsburg Weekly Herald 12 June 1857. Major William STOKES, one of the oldest citizens of Jefferson Co., Ohio died at his residence near Knoxville on the 15th inst. of paralysis. He settled on the farm on which he died in 1799 and was in his 81 year. Wellsburg Herald 27 July 1859. Died on Sunday the 15 of May at his residence in this county, Major William STRAIN, Esq. was one of the 1st magistrates of the county and fulfilled the office of Sheriff. Wellsburg Gazette 26 Aug 1831. Edward TOY killed in a coal mining accident. Left a wife and child - Catholic - buried in new cemetery. (This is a news article about the accident.)
