Steorts, cousin of Stonewall Jackson, one of the best and most respected citizens of Clay County passed quietly across the river of death at his home near Wallback in Clay County, January 28, 1914. Mr. Steorts was born in Lewis County February 24, 1834 and had he lived one more month he would have reached his 80th milestone. He came to Clay County in 1873 and settled on Sandy when that part of this county was almost a wilderness, bought a farm, reared his houses and barns, cleared out his farm, and lived a happy and peaceful life surrounded by a happy contented family, and at peace with his neighbors who in the beginning of his abode on Sandy were widely scattered in the then thinly settled district. Mr. Steorts lived to see the land around him cleared. Roads constructed, school house and churches built and the community grow to be one of the most prosperous in the county. His wife was Amanda Jane Cookman, a cousin of Stonewall Jackson, who he married in Lewis County and brought here as a young bride to Clay. Mrs. Steorts preceded her husband to the great beyond about six years ago since which time Mr. Steorts has lived with his youngest son John who resides at the old homestead. Mr. Steorts reared a family of respected and obedient children, Alvenza, William, Horace, Ashby, and John. Mrs. Jonathan Ellsworth (Theodosia) Delany of Los Angeles, Mrs. William (Eunice) Cookman of Florida all of whom are living but William. Mr. Steorts was one of nature’s Noblemen, his door was always open to his friends and neighbors, and he made everyone his neighbor and no traveler was ever turned from his place hungry. He had a kind and generous disposition and those who knew him best loved him most. In religious belief he was a Baptist and was a consistent member of his church and lived a Christian life. Politically he was a Republican but he was not radical in his religious or political beliefs, while he adhered to them with a strong and loyal heart he accorded to every man the right to whatever faith he believed in. He was an enthusiastic Mason and for many years was a regular communicant of the lodge at Clay. Many of his lodge brothers attended the funeral. He was laid to rest beside his wife in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery on January 30th in the presence of a large concourse of friends and relatives. Rev. N. B. Hambric officiating.
