Vass, 88, of Ronceverte, formerly of White Sulphur Springs, died yesterday, June 17, in the C & O Hospital, Clifton Forge, VA after an extended illness. He was a retired telegraph operator and a life member of the C & O Veteran employee Association. He was a member of Emmanuel Methodist Church of White Sulphur Springs, Alleghany Lodge No. 23, I.O.O.F. of Covington, VA, Kate Carpenter Rebekah Lodge No. 53 of White Sulphur Springs and the ancient Mystic Order of Samaritan, Aden Sanctorum No. 228 of Clifton Forge. Born in Monroe County, WV, Oct. 23, 1868, he was the son of the late Anderson and Martha Vaughan Vass. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. L. G. East, Low Moor,VA, and Mrs. H. G. Smith, Holly Hill, FL; two sons, Rex Vass, New York City and Oscar Ray Vass, MM3, U.S. Navy, aboard the Destroyer U.S. Hale. The funeral service will be held from Emmanuel Methodist Church, White Sulphur Springs, Wednesday at 2 p.m. conducted by the Rev. S. D. Rexrode. Internment will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, White Sulphur Springs with graveside rites by I.O.O.F. Lodge of Covington. Members of the I.O.O.F. Lodge will serve as active pallbearers and members of the Rebekah Lodge will carry flowers. The body will remain at the Shanklin Funeral Home, White Sulphur Springs, until one hour before the service when it will be taken to the church.
