Crawford: a son of Robert Crawford, was born in 1830 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He came with his father to Butler District, Hancock County, West Virginia, and located on the James W. Brown farm, which his father purchased in 1849. He assisted him in farming as his vocation. In 1857 he took charge of the farm, and has been engaged in that business since. He married Miss Mary Porter, daughter of James S. Porter, of same county. They have a family of five children -- James P., Eliza M., William A., Amanda and George. They are members of the Presbyterian Church. He has been a ruling elder in the church for ten years. He is president of the board of education, has been elected three times to that position.
