Persons or organizations desiring to use this material, must obtain the written consent of the contributor, or the legal representative of the submitter, and contact the listed USGenWeb archivist with proof of this consent. ********************************************************************** The Review Friday, June 1, 2001 Dr. David Stanley Pugh, 81 CHESTER - Dr. David Stanley Pugh, 81, local area family practitioner, died peacefully at his residence after a lengthy illness on Thursday, May 31, 2001, alongside his loving wife Yvonne, of 56 years. Dr. Pugh was born in Chester, Nov. 28, 1919, a son of the late Rev. G. Stanley and Eva L. Stewart Pugh. A sister, Eleanor Mae Pinney, precedes him in death. A lifelong resident of Chester, Dr. Pugh was the fifth generation grandson of David Pugh, the founder of Pughtown. Dr. Pugh attended Chester High School and graduated from Martins Ferry High School, Martins Ferry, Ohio, in 1937. He then went on to graduate from Geneva College in 1941 and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 1944. He served his medical residency in Wheeling at the Ohio Valley Medical Center and then enlisted in the Army - Air Force Medical Corps, where he served 17 months in Japan. He was discharged as a captain in October of 1947. After returning to his hometown of Chester, he set up his medical practice where he was to continue for the next 47 years. As well as his commitment to his community in working with numerous service clubs, he was an active member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church. He served in the capacity of elder and trustee, and various other committees. During many of those years, in addition to his family practice, Dr. Pugh assisted with surgery, delivered an untold number of babies, covered the hospital emergency rooms and made house calls day and night. He witnessed the first heart surgeries, was on service at Mercy Hospital when the first penicillin was given in Pittsburgh and saw many advancements and changes in the world of medicine. Dr. Pugh was honored by numerous medical and civic groups, as well as by his peers. He retired in 1994 after devoting nearly a half-century to the care of his patients through general family medicine. Dr. Pugh was involved in more than 50 years association with West Virginia State Medical Association, American Medical Association and American Academy of Family Physicians. Dr. Pugh served two terms as president and served more than 50 years for the Hancock County Medical Association. He served two terms as president of medical staff at the East Liverpool City Hospital and was Hancock County Health Officer for five years. He was elected surgeon general for both the Chester American Legion Post 121 and Chester Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6450. He served as commissioner representing Upper Ohio Valley Presbytery in 1991 for Presbyterian Church General Assembly. Other memberships include: Chester Kiwanis, Sons of The American Revolution - Gen. Anthony Wayne Chapter, Tri-State Genealogical Society, Hancock County Chamber of Commerce and Chester Water Board. He is survived by his wife, Yvonne Kerr Pugh, whom he married Jan. 24, 1945; three sons, David W. Pugh of East Liverpool, Richard S. Pugh of Chester and George R. Pugh and his wife Peggy of Steubenville; two daughters, Mrs. Ted (Denise) McKenna of Chester and Mrs. Bill (Suzanne) Sarkine of West Bloomfield, Mich.; two sisters, Mrs. Merwin (Ruth Alice) Whitlatch of Rochester, Pa., and Mrs. Winston (Lynn) Smith of Wilmore, Ky.; 10 grandchildren, Scott, David S. II, Jonathan, Jeffrey, Jason, Jillian and Jocelyn Pugh and Nicole, Natalie (Hall) and Teddy McKenna; and seven great- grandchildren. Friends may call Saturday, June 2, afternoon and evening at the Arner Funeral Chapel, 607 Carolina Ave., Chester. Funeral services will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 3. The Rev. Katrina A. Lewis and the Rev. Mark R. Wilds will officiate. Burial will be in Locust Hill Cemetery, with the Tri-State Burial Group to accord full military honors.
