Davis, age 80, of Maysville, WV, died Monday, April 5, 1999 at Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg, WV. Born April 1, 1919 in Forman, WV, he was the son of the late Otha A. and Lula (Veach) Davis. He was preceded in death besides his parents by an infant son, Gerald J. Davis, Jr. of World War II. Surviving is his wife, Glendora F. (Kessel) Davis, whom he married on September 12, 1946; one son, Gerry A. Davis of Maysville, WV; one daughter, Glenda S. Martin of Petersburg, WV; one sister, Twila M. Hogbin of Petersburg, WV; four grandchildren, Gerry A. Davis, Jr., Kimberly Davis, Kaitlyn Martin and Madison Martin of Maysville, WV; three nieces, Darlene Pallavincini and Bonnie Hogbin of Petersburg, WV and Judith Rohrbaugh of Maysville, WV; four nephews, Gary Hogbin of Virginia Beach, VA; Carl D. Hogbin, II of Petersburg, WV; Charles Kessel and Richard Kessel of Maysville, WV. Funeral services were held at the Schaeffer Funeral Home on Thursday with the Rev. Stanley Kile and Rev. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Schaeffer Funeral Home. ************************************************* MANLY FRANCIS DAVIS THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, August 13, 1997 The funeral service for Manly Francis Davis, 79, of Mathias, was held Saturday at the Mathias Church of the Brethren by the Rev. Landis Dove an Olin Bailey. Burial was in the Mathias Cemetery in Mathias. Mr. Davis died Wednesday, August 6, 1997 at Winchester Medical Center. He was born September 20, 1917 in Akron, Ohio and was the son of the late Manly Bascomb and Laura Jane Andrews Davis. He was a graduate of Ellet High School in Akron, Ohio, and attended the University of Akron. He served in the Navy Air Corps during WWII. He was a former member of the Mathias Ruritan Club, where he was secretary for many years and where he had a substantial effect on the club. He and his wife were Co-chair of the Hardy County Family History Book. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Akron, Ohio and attended the Mathias Church of the Brethren. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service where he was Director of Operation in the Akron Ohio Post Office. On March 17, 1945 he married the former Arlene M. Luttrell. Their son, Gregory Davis, passed away on March 16, 1985. Mr. Davis is survived by his wife, Arlene Davis of Mathias; one son, Rod Davis of San Diego, CA; two daughters, Anne Louise Davis of Minneapolis, MN; Lisa Shipe of Mathias, WV; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Grandle Funeral Home, Broadway, VA. ***************************************************** ROSCOE BROOKS DEAN THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, July 30, 1997 Roscoe Brooks Dean, a devoted husband, father, and friend, age 56, of Romney, WV, died Sunday, July 27, 1997 at the Trough General Store and Canoe Rental, Romney WV. He was born July 26, 1941 in the Trough area, Hardy County, WV and was a son of the late James Howard and Retha Jones (Cox) Dean. Mr. Dean was a lifelong, active member of the St. Luke Presbyterian Church and served as Treasurer for the St. Luke Cemetery. He was a dedicated teacher and coach for 31 years and an avid sportsman who loved hunting and fishing and all competitive activities. He graduated from Romney High School in 1959 and Shepherd College in 1963. While at Shepherd, Mr. Dean started on the Varsity Basketball team from 1959-1963. He later received his Master's degree from WVU. During a 10 year period of his career Mr. Dean coached at Robert E. Lee High School and Robison Secondary School where he served as head basketball coach. During this period he led three different teams to VA State Championships. For the past ten years Mr. Dean has taught Health, Careers and Physical Education at Romney Junior High School. During a portion of this time he coached the Freshman Basketball team. Mr. Dean and his wife Jeannie have owned and operated the Trough General Store and Canoe Rental for the past five years. Surviving are his wife of 24 years, Jeannie (Propst) Dean, Romney, WV; two sons, Jeffrey S. Buffenmeyer and wife, Sherry, Finzel, MD and Jerry Ross Dean, Romney, WV; one daughter, Jodie B. Corbin and husband Tony, Petersburg, WV; two brothers, Jennings H. Dean, West Pittsburgh, PA and Jerry N. Dean, Romney, WV; two sisters, Mrs. Alice Marie Rinker and Mrs. Lucy Jane Staggs, both of Romney, WV; one granddaughter, Taylor Marie Buffenmeyer, Finzel, MD; and many wonderful friends. Funeral services will be conducted at the Romney First United Methodist Church today, Wednesday, July 30, at 11:00 a.m., with Rev. John S. Franklin officiating. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Shaffer Funeral Home, Inc., Romney, WV. ************************************* EDMOND ALEXANDER DEHAVEN THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, July 16, 1997 Edmond Alexander DeHaven, 88, of Marriottsville, Maryland, died on Wednesday, May 14, 1997 at Saint Agnes Hospital of acute kidney failure. He was in the hospital from March 7 until he died. Mr. DeHaven was born May 4, 1909 in Siler, Virginia son of the late Steward and Annie Parkinson DeHaven. He worked for Wilton Orchard, Ellicott City, Maryland 8 years. He was employed at C. R. Daniels, a steel worker for over 25 years. He retired and enjoyed taking care of his own orchard and gardens. He married Gladys Mae Lantz DeHaven. Surviving with his wife are: daughter, Norma Mae DeHaven; two sisters, Pearl Nagley and Bessie Giffin of Winchester, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his son, Earl Edmond DeHaven, August 9, 1994. Also five sisters, Sudie Madagan, Bertha Unger, Eva Armentrout, Catheryn DeHaven, all of Winchester, Virginia and Elner Hutsler of Elkridge, Maryland; brother, Jackson DeHaven of Winchester, Virginia. A funeral service was held Monday, May 19, 1997 at 2 p.m. at the Harry H. Witzke Funeral Home. Officiating was Rev. Marion Ellis, Woodbine, Full Gospel Church in Woodbine, Maryland. Brother Claude Berry (Randy) sang, "Tell Me The Story of Jesus", "Higher Ground", and "When The Roll Is Called Up Yonder." Interment was in Mountain View Cemetery, Marriottsville. DELAWDER THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, July 23, 1996 Lena Virginia Delawder, 85, 1593 Hahns Lane, Toms Brook, died Saturday, July 12, 1997, at her home. Mrs. Delawder was born March 29, 1912, in Mathias, WV, and was the daughter of the late Wheeler and Elizabeth Jenkins Delawder. She was a housewife. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Granville Lonas and March Delawder. Surviving are seven daughters, Mary Strawderman, Timberville and Rosa Lee Cubbage, Frances Lucas and Virginia Cubbage, all of Stanley, Nancy Smelser, Luray, Jeraldine Lonas, Mount Jackson and Susie Combs, Toms Brook; four sons, Ralph Lonas, Basye, Stanley Lonas, Mount Jackson and Johnny Lonas and Calvin Frye, Jr., both of Stanley; one brother, James Delawder, Woodstock; 39 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; and a number of great-great-grandchildren. The funeral was held on Tuesday at the Dellinger Funeral Home in Mount Jackson with the Revs. Everette Burner and Donald Pitsonbarger officiating. Burial was in the Mount Hermon Church Cemetery, west of Mount Jackson. THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, September 10, 1997 Loren E. Dent, Sr., 76, a resident of Dawn View Nursing Home, Fort Ashby, formerly of Purgitsville, died Friday, Sept. 12, 1997, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland, MD. Born Dec. 10, 1920, in Old Fields, he was the son of the late Thomas and Nettie (Shoemaker) Dent. He also was preceded in death by six brothers and four sisters. Mr. Dent retired from the Chessie System Railroad as a Carman after serving 36 years. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Carman and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving in the European Theater. He was a member of the American Legion, Westernport, and the VFW, McCoole. Surviving are his wife, Bernice Irene (McKenzie) Dent, Dawn View Nursing Home, Fort Ashby; two sons, Loren E. Dent, Jr., Fort Ashby, and John R. Dent, Burlington; one daughter, Sylvia J. Baker, New Creek; one sister, Dorcas Genemore, West Newton, PA; 11 grandchildren, Tracey Rohrbaugh, Loren E. Dent III, Kevin Dent, Shanna Day, Travis Dent, Lucas Dent, Shane Dent, Cody Dent, Scott Orem, Mark Orem, and Michael Orem; and three great-grandchildren. DICE THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, May 8, 1996 Ruth Harman Dice, 86, Franklin, WV, died May 2, 1996 at Winchester Medical Center. Mrs. Dice was born March 19, 1910, in Upper Marlboro, MD, and was a daughter of the late Thadeus Harman and Henrietta Crites Harman. She received her teaching certificate in 1930 and taught public school for 14 years. She was a member of the Franklin Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday school. A faithful member of the Presbyterian Women, she was honored with a life membership from Franklin Presbyterian Women. She was a 50-year charter member of the Order of the Eastern Star No. 138 of Franklin and served as Worthy Matron. She had been active in the Franklin Home Demonstration Extension Club since 1935. Mrs. Dice recently completed her life dream of obtaining her bachelor's degree and would have graduated from Shepherd College on May 11, 1996. On June 27, 1934, she married John M. Dice, who died July 6, 1985. Surviving are one daughter, Loretta Dice McMahan, King George; one son, George H. Dice, Franklin, WV; one sister, Arletta Bean, Moorefield, WV and two grandchildren. Dr. Richard Young and the Rev. Roy Dice conducted the funeral on Monday at the Franklin Presbyterian Church. Burial was in the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Franklin. Born in 1913 in McComas, West Virginia, the daughter of John Marvin and Rosalie Snead Stephens, she was a graduate of Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, Virginia, where she majored in music. She was an accomplished pianist and vocalist and taught music in the public school system in Roanoke for thirty-five years. In 1979 she moved from Roanoke to Lost River, West Virginia, where she resided at The Guest House with her son, Bob. She was a former member of First Baptist Church of Roanoke. She predeceased her husband, Wayne W. Dillard, her mother and father, and her brother, John M. Stephens, Jr., all of Roanoke. She is survived by her sons, Robert B. Dillard of Lost River and Duane B. Dillard of Hagerstown, Maryland; her sisters, Rosalie S. (Featie) Lucas of Hollins, Virginia, Harriette S. Rothenberger of Salem, Virginia, Louise S. Cropp of Charlottesville, Virginia, her brother, Winston M. Stephens of Sunset Beach, North Carolina, and dear friends, Tammy Stanley and David Mickow of Lost River as well as many devoted nieces, nephews and grandchildren. Know as "Mother", "Dot" and "Sister", she will be remembered for her generosity of love, time and spirit as well as her talent as a musician and craftsperson. DOVE THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, August 28, 1996 Albert Lee Dove, 92, Criders, died Aug. 22, 1996, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg. He had been a resident at Oak Lea Nursing Home for the past two years. Mr. Dove was born July 22, 1904, in Rockingham County and was a son of the late George W. and Cora Lois Baker Dove. He was a farmer and a member of the Valley View Mennonite Church in Criders. On July 5, 1927, he married the former Bessie Lee Whetzel, who died June 7, 1981. Survivors include one daughter, Eileen Dove Stultz, Mathias, WV; one foster daughter, Jean Whetzel Ritchie, Broadway; one brother, David S. Dove, Criders; three sisters, Clara May, Criders, Lillie Dove, Broadway and Ressie Yankey, Mount Solon; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. The Rev. Michael Shenk conducted the funeral on Sunday at the Valley View Mennonite Church. Burial was in the Caplinger Cemetery in Criders. DOVE THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, October 2, 1996 Carl Ashley Dove, 56, Quicksburg, died Sept. 25, 1996, at his home. Mr. Dove was born Jan. 11, 1940, in Bergton and was a son of the late John M. and Margie Stultz Dove. He had been employed at S. C. Gladwell for 17 years and was a member of Liberty Brethren Church in Quicksburg. On Dec. 28, 1962, he married the former Helen L. Hopkins, who survives. Other survivors include one son, David William Dove, Sr., Fulks Run; one brother, Earl A. Dove, Singers Glen; one grandson; and three step-grandchildren. JUNIOR DOVE THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, November 10, 1999 E. Junior Dove, 75, Broadway, died November 4, 1999 at the Camelot Health and Rehabilitation Center in Harrisonburg. Mr. Dove was born June 23, 1924, in Mathias, WV and was a son of the late Nelson and Grace Wilkins Dove. He was a barber at Branner Barbershop in Broadway for more than 50 years. He was an Army Veteran of World War II and was a member of the Linville Creek Church of the Brethren. On November 7, 1946 he married the former June Baker, who died April 22, 1992. Survivors include one daughter, Dorothy J. Dove, Harrisonburg; one son, Stephen R. Dove, Broadway; one brother, Carroll G. Dove, Broadway; and four grandchildren. The Rev. Paul Roth conducted a memorial service on Sunday at the Linville Creek Church of the Brethren. Burial was private. Born July 14, 1914 in Rio, WV, she was the daughter of the late Angus and Mary Leary Smith. She was a lifelong resident of Rio, a housewife and a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, Baker, WV. She was also preceded in death by one brother, one sister, three half brothers and one half sister. Surviving are her husband, Elmer Dove; one son, Kenneth Dove of Wardensville, WV; three daughters, Evelyn See of New Market, VA, Erma Brown of Baker, WV and Iris Funk of Romney, WV; one brother, Edward (Jeff) Smith, East Sparta, Ohio; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two step grandchildren; two step great-grandchildren; and one step great-great-grandchild. Mr. Dove was born April 16, 1917, in Virginia, the son of Able T. and Martha Miller Dove. He retired in 1977 after 22 years as a carpenter at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD. He was in the Army during World War II and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the Bronze Star, the Good Conduct Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Service Ribbon, the American Theatre Service Ribbon, the World War II Victory Ribbon, and the Distinguished Unit Badge. Surviving are his wife, Charlotte V. Dove; four sons, Jim A. Dove of Beltsville, MD, Larry R. Dove of Monrovia, MD, Michael Lee Dove of Walkersville, MD, and Ronald R. Dove of Quicksburg; one sister, Mae Plaskett of Connecticut; 14 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A funeral service was conducted Wednesday at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Derwood, MD. Mrs. Durst was born November 17, 1911 in Needmore, WV, the daughter of Joseph and Florence Miller Wilson. She retired as owner and operator of Durst Grocery and was a member of the Tearcoat Church of the Brethren, Augusta, where she was a Sunday schoolteacher and deaconess. She was married to Harry G. Durst, who died in 1984. Surviving is a son, B. Lewis Durst of Augusta; three grandsons; and five granddaughters. A funeral was held on Friday at McKee Funeral Home, Augusta, WV with Pastor Kenneth Dolan and the Rev. Woodrow Brown officiating. Burial was in the Levels Cemetery, Levels, WV.
