Born on May 18, 1915 in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, he was the son of Albert S. Bailey and Louise (Brent) Bailey, both of whom are deceased. Mr. Bailey was preceded in death by one son, Albert Mikell. He was a retired owner and operator of Paul B. Bailey Lumber Company and Joy Centers; a member of the Duffey Memorial United Methodist Church, Moorefield Lions Club, LOOM #358 of Moorefield, Elks Lodge of Huntington, WV; Wednesday Evening Prayer Group and served in Mississippi and West Virginia National Guard. Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Coker Bailey of Moorefield; three daughters, Ann B. Rhodes of St. Louis, MO, E. Frances Murphy of LaVale, MD; and Elizabeth B. Thomas of Stephens City, VA; one daughter-in-law, Joy Pratt Bailey of Moorefield; two sisters, Olive B. Blalock of Mobile, AL; Lydie B. Mandrona of Atlanta, GA; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. Graveside rites were accorded at Olivet Cemetery in Moorefield on Monday, March 18, 1996 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Bruce Macbeth officiating. There was no visitation. CAMPBELL THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, March 13, 1996 Ruby Violet Campbell, 81, Penn Laird, died March 5, 1996 at her home. She had not been well for six years and had been seriously ill for the past year. Mrs. Campbell was born Aug. 14, 1914, in Mathias, WV, a daughter of the late Adam and Eliza Whetzel Thomas. She attended school in Mathias, moving to Rockingham County at an early age. She lived in Penn Laird for the past 31 years, was employed by Bowman Bag Co. before retiring and was a member of Mt. Pleasant Church of the Brethren. On Feb. 8, 1930, she married Lurty D. Campbell, Sr., who died April 16, 1990. Survivors include four sons: Everett W., Donnie L., A. Ray and Lurty D. Campbell, Jr., Mount Crawford; three daughters: Geneva Lambert and Doris Washington, Mount Crawford, and Beatrice Heerman, Penn Laird; a sister, Velma Simmers, Timberville; 24 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. CHAMBERS THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, April 3, 1996 Dorothy Virginia Chambers, 76, of Mars, PA, and formerly of Lost River, WV and Cameron, WV, died March 25, 1996 in Mars, PA. She was born February 29, 1920 in Aleppo, PA and was the daughter of the late Frank and Alice Conrad Shipman. She was the former owner of "Flip & Dots' Tavern" in Lost River. She was a member of the Aleppo Brethren Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Chambers, who died in March 20, 1969. Surviving are one son, Floyd David Chambers of Mars, PA; two daughters, Imogene Chambers of Cameron, WV, Bonnie Finch of Graysville, PA; 12 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren; close friend, Charles Breeding of Lost River, WV. THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, May 15, 1996 Julian Baker "Woogs" Chipley, Jr., age 77, of Moorefield, WV, passed away on May 9, 1996, at the Winchester Rehabilitation Center in Winchester, VA. Born February 1, 1919, in Baltimore, MD, he was the son of the late Julian B. Chipley, Sr. and the late Emma Cunningham Chipley. Surviving are his wife, Elsie Halterman Chipley of Moorefield; one daughter, Carolyn Barr of Wardensville, WV; one son, Michael Chipley of Petersburg, WV; five grandchildren; and two great- grandchildren. Mr. Chipley served in World War II with the Cee Bees, retired as a US Postal Clerk, was employed at Hawse Moorefield Foodland for nearly 20 years, was a member of the Moorefield Presbyterian Church where he was a Deacon, and a member of the Moorefield American Legion. A memorial service was held at the Moorefield Presbyterian Church on Saturday morning, with the Pastor Bruce A. Macbeth officiating. COMBS THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, March 27, 1996 Odie Gladyse Combs, 90, Lost City, WV, died Sunday, March 17, 1996, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg. Mrs. Combs was born Sept. 5, 1905, in Hardy County, WV, and was the daughter of the late Siram and Margaret Jenkins Whetzel. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Combs. Survivors include one daughter, Beulah Combs Hammidi, Orinda, Calif.; one son, Olen Combs, Mathias, WV; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. The Rev. She was a lifelong resident of Rio, a housewife and a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, Baker, WV. She was born June 22, 1925 in Hardy County WV and was a daughter of the late Moses P. and Jessie Mae Wilkins Teets. She was a cook at Broadway Quick Lunch and a member of the Timberville Church of the Brethren. Survivors include her husband, Joseph C. Born on April 10, 1923 in Kessel, WV, she was the daughter of the late Otto G. Woerner and Cora Kessel. She was preceded in death by one brother. She was a farmer and lifelong resident of Hardy County, West Virginia; a member of the Duffey Memorial United Methodist Church in Moorefield, and the Hardy County Farm Bureau. Survivors include two daughters, Mary Arvella Poling of Moorefield and Carol A. Moran of Fisher, WV; two sisters, Nellie Biller of Lost River, WV and Cora Woerner of Thurmont, MD; and seven grandchildren. FITZWATER THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, April 10, 1996 The funeral service for Melvin Alston Fitzwater, 79, of Mathias, was held Thursday at the Mathias Church of the Brethren. Officiating was the Rev. Harold Barnett. Burial was in Mathias. Mr. Fitzwater died Monday, April 1, 1996 at the UVA Hospital in Charlottesville. He was born February 10, 1917 in Hardy County, WV, and was the son of the late Casper and Mary Strawderman Fitzwater. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during WWII. He was a member of the Mathias Church of the Brethren and Lost River V.F.W. #7780. He had worked as a Welder's Helper with Carl Smith's Pipeline Construction and was a farmer. On January 22, 1950 he married the former Audrey Wilkins who survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Vera Fitzwater Shockey of Old Fields, WV; one son, Albert W. Fitzwater of Mathias; one sister, Lefa Delawder of Broadway; two grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mathias-Baker Rescue Squad. ****************************************************** NELSON RAY FLEMING THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, April 3, 1996 Nelson Ray Fleming, 41, of Burlington, died March 30, 1996 at Sacred Heart Hospital in Cumberland, MD. He had been in failing health for several months. He was born October 4, 1954 in Harrisonburg and was the son of Violet Lantz Fleming of Broadway and the late Clarence Fleming, Jr. He had worked for Truck Enterprises Inc. since 1977 and moved to Burlington, WV and lived there for the last seven years. He was a member of the Linville Creek Church of the Brethren and was a member of the Broadway Fire Dept. On December 27, 1976 he married the former Lana Ellen Dove who survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Kimberly Fleming of Burlington; two brothers, Pete Fleming of Broadway and Kenny Fleming of Timberville. A funeral service was conducted Tuesday at the Linville Creek Church of the Brethren in Broadway, VA by the Revs. Paul Roth and Bob Sutherland. Burial was in the Linville Creek Cemetery. FLINN THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, March 20, 1996 Bobby Gene Flinn, 61, of 220 N. 11th St., Oakland, died Tuesday, March 12, 1996 at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland. Born Feb. 19, 1935, in Belleville, WV he was a son of the late James O. Flinn and Anna Marie (Tommey) Flinn. Mr. Flinn was employed for 27 years by the H-P Stores as a manager and buyer. Following that he owned and operated Flinn's Family Store in Petersburg, WV from 1982 until the present, and Flinn's Family Store in Oakland from 1990 until the present. He was an active member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, served on its administrative board and was a member of the United Methodist Men. He was a Master Mason in Moorefield Lodge 29, A.F. & A.M. He was a member of the Cumberland Consistory Scottish Rite and the Ali Ghan Temple. He was also a member of the Greater Oakland Business Association and the Petersburg Chamber of Commerce. Surviving are his wife, Marianne (Deahl) Flinn; two sons, Bobby Gene Flinn II, Oakland, and Michael Bradley Flinn, Glen Burnie; one daughter, Melody Ann Zimmerman, Frederick; two sisters, Ruth Arbogast and Wanda Friddle, both of Petersburg; and three grandchildren. Services were conducted at St. Paul's United Methodist Church on Friday with the Rev. Doyle Payne officiating. Interment was in the Garrett County Memorial Gardens. Born June 26, 1918 in Thorn Bottom, WV, he was the son of the late Obid and Susan Sager Funk. Mr. Funk was a retired farmer and timberman and was a member of the Rock Oak Church of the Brethren. He married Savilla Heishman Funk Sept. 11, 1945. Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Richard Funk of Highview, WV, Daniel Funk of Woodstock; four daughters, Beatrice Funk, Edinburg, VA, Blanche Sager, Lost River, WV, Maxine Helmick, Rio, WV and Virginia Butler, Lehigh Acres, FL; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, May 15, 1996 Rev. John Allen Goldizen, Sr., age 61 of Medley, WV, died Monday, May 6, 1996 at Grant Memorial Hospital. Born June 18, 1934 in Jordan Run, WV, he was the son of the late Rev. G. Lester and Dora (Evans) Goldizen. Preceded in death besides his parents, is one brother, Virgil Goldizen. Rev. Goldizen was a licensed minister with the Assemblies of God. For the past 19 years he was Pastor of Rig Assembly of God Church, Rig, WV. He was a graduate of Petersburg High School Class of 1953. He was a farmer and avid hunter and was a member of the local Union 70 International Brotherhood Electrical Workers (IBEW), Fairfax, VA. Surviving is his wife, Carole (Stallings) Goldizen. They were united in marriage on June 30, 1955. Also surviving are two sons, John A. Goldizen, Jr. of Bunker Hill, WV and Steven A. Goldizen of Maysville, WV; one daughter, Teresa (Goldizen) Pennington of Burlington, KY; one brother, Reginald L. Mr. Guthrie was born Jan. 15, 1914, in Milam, WV, and was a son of the late John Balum and Mary Jane Turner Guthrie. He was a retired carpenter for Neff and Myers Development in Timberville and did farming work. He was a member of Bethel Church of the Brethren in Keezletown. On Dec. 19, 1934, he married the former Nellie Jane Michell, who survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Naomi W. Bare, Fulks Run, and Mary Grace Frye, Harrisonburg; two sons, John D. Sites and Donald L. Guthrie, both of Broadway; one brother, Thomas Andrew Jackson Guthrie, St. Petersburg, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. The Rev. Born February 3, 1925 at Rig, WV, he was the son of the late Orie J. and Annie (Eye) Hardy. Mr. Hardy was preceded in death besides his parents by two sisters, Loretta Miller and Margie See. Mr. Hardy was a former employee of Petersburg Lowengart Company and was Assembly of God by faith. Surviving is his wife, Mary Lou (Crites) Hardy. They were united in marriage August 19, 1950. Born June 15, 1900 in Wardensville, she was the daughter of the late John and Bertie Garrett Heishman. Her husband, Mr. Loring Heishman, preceded her in death in 1973. Surviving are two sons, Norman Heishman of Wardensville; Eugene Heishman of Romney; 2 daughters, Gertrude Kibler of Woodstock, VA and Katheryn Forsythe, Venice FL and one sister, Arbutus Wiggins, Winchester, VA; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren. HEISHMAN THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, July 24, 1996 Raymond Robert Heishman, 85, of Harrisonburg, died Sunday, July 7, 1996, at his home. The funeral was conducted at the Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home by the Rev. John Kiblinger. A graveside service was conducted in the Wardensville Cemetery in Wardensville, WV. Mr. Heishman was born Oct. 7, 1910, in Wardensville, son of the late William Thomas and Rebecca Landacre Heishman. He was a mechanic for 13 years at Shenandoah Transportation and had formerly been employed by Camelot Hall Nursing Home for 14 years. He had attended school in Wardensville and was a member of the Ridgeway Mennonite Church. He was the husband of the late Della Gladys Funkhouser Heishman. Surviving are three daughters, Lois Whitecotton and Sadie Miller, both of Harrisonburg, and Carolyn Wenger of Jacksonville, NC; a brother, Edgar Heishman of Front Royal; a sister, Alma Gregory of Craigsville; six grandchildren; and four great-granddaughters. He was born January 13, 1918 in Lost City, WV, and was the son of the late Charles Franklin and Allene Peer Hinegardner. Mr. Hinegardner was an ordained minister in the Church of the Brethren. He was a member of the Timberville Church of the Brethren. He was a charter member of the Mathias Ruritan Club. He was baptized in the Lost City Baptist Church and attended Sunday School at the Ivanhoe Presbyterian Church. He served in the U.S. Marine Corp from 1942-1945. Before retiring in 1983 and moving back to Mathias he served in Iowa for 24 years. His first church was Udell Brethren Church then Prairie City Church of the Brethren for 13 years, Morgan Valley Christian Church, English River Church of the Brethren - Kind Ross Christian Church, Marshalltown Church of the Brethren, then seven years later back to the Prairie City Church of the Brethren. After he retired and moved back to the Mathias area he was an Interim minister with the Timberville Church of the Brethren, the Brick and Oakdale Church of the Brethren in Maysville and last served with the Flat Rock and Stony Creek Church of the Brethren until 1993. On December 24, 1937 he married the former Ethel Mathias who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Elaine Hauck of Richmond, VA and Mary Lee Schlapia of Creston, Iowa; four grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. A memorial service was held Saturday at the Mathias Brethren Church by Pastors Bernard A. Fuska and Jim Corbitt. Burial was in the Cedar Hill Cemetery. Shipe, Jr. and daughter-in-law, Melanie K. Shipe. Mr. Shipe was born October 7, 1908 and was the son of the late John A. and Mabel Moyers Shipe. Mr. Shipe attended local schools as well as Dalesville Academy near Roanoke, VA and Shepherd College in Shepherdstown, WV. He was a retired farmer and early in life had been a schoolteacher. In February of 1950, he married Ollie Manning Hoskins, who preceded him in death August 12, 1975. Mr. Shipe was a member of the Mathias Church of the Brethren. He was a charter member of the Mathias Ruritan Club. LAWRENCE E. SPEARS THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, March 20, 1996 Col. Lawrence Eugene Spears of Elkins, a retired U.S. Air Force career officer who served the state and region as an economic planner and developer for several years, died March 14, 1996. A former Deputy Commissioner of Commerce for West Virginia, Spears was chosen by then Governor Hulett Smith to open the first Appalachian Regional Commission office in West Virginia. Spears was married to former State Senator Jae Spears, an 18-year member of the West Virginia Legislature. He directed the 30th Mountain State Forest Festival, one of the largest festivals in the Eastern United States. Following service in state government, Spears became the executive director for the Upper Potomac Development Corporation, which coordinated the economic development projects for the eight counties of the Eastern Panhandle. When the state Regional Planning and Development Councils were put into play, Spears was hired by Region 8 as Executive Director. Under his guidance, the Eastern Panhandle was one of the first areas to develop sanitary landfills to replace open dumps and to establish industrial parks. During that period, the area also saw many water and sewage projects completed. Following his retirement as Region 8 Director in 1981, he became a consultant for economic development projects. Spears was a former member of the Lexington, Kentucky Jaycees and a former member of Elkins Rotary. He served as state president of the West Virginia Planners Association and served on the board of directors for the Mountain State Forest Festival since 1968. He also served as representative to the Region 8 Area Aging Agency Council. As a pilot in the 60th Troop Carrier Group, Spears took part in the longest combat flight ever attempted to drop paratroopers over enemy territories in World War II. The successful mission to North Africa established the record which is still held by the 60th Troop Carrier Group and which is memorialized by monument at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Museum. He also participated in the invasion of Sicily and Italy. After flying his combat missions in the Korean Conflict, he was appointed Director of Troop Movement Control, and later in the Far East Air Force headquarters, Tokyo, Spears conducted daily briefings for General Weyland, Commanding General of FEAF, and General Mark Clark, Commanding General of the Far East. For his outstanding contribution during the Conflict, he received the Bronze Star. He was also the recipient of the Air Medal and many clusters for his service activities. Spears' last assignment was as Commander of all tactical air refueling in England, Western Europe, the Mediterranean and North Africa. He served as an ROTC instructor for the University of Kentucky and for Davis & Elkins College. Son of William Roscoe and Emma Lilly Spears, and a native of Ceredo, Spears was an outstanding West Virginia High School athlete, having been named All-State in football and basketball at Ceredo-Kenova High School. Recruited by Adolph Rupp, he lettered in basketball, football, and track at the University of Kentucky and was a heavyweight- wrestling champion. A member of the student council at U.K., he also helped found the "K" Club for athletes before graduating. A member of the First United Methodist Church of Elkins, he is survived by his wife, Jae, and four children: Katherine Cooper, Charleston; Marsha Spears-Duncan, Austin, Texas; Lawrence Spears, Raleigh, North Carolina; and James Spears, Bratislava, Slovakia; eight grandchildren; and four brothers. He was preceded in death by a sister, Eva Burks, and a brother, Arthur Spears. Mrs. Strawderman was born Nov. 11, 1934, in Lost River, WV and was the daughter of the late Arthur and Nettie Frances Halterman Teets. She was a member of New Dale Church of the Brethren near Lost River and had been employed by the Carper and Carper Dry Cleaners in Winchester. On Jan. 17, 1953, she married Garland E. "Dude" Strawderman, who died Dec. 1, 1988. Survivors include three daughters, Viola Louise Ryan and Opal Arbutus Wolford, both of Winchester, and Genevie Ann Sager, Mathias; two sisters, Agnus Strawderman and Addie Lorenz, both of Mathias; one brother, Delbert Teets, Mathias; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was born Dec. 16, 1924 at Czar, WV, a son of the late Charles Hayes and Hazel Smith VanGilder. Mr. VanGilder is survived by three brothers, Charles Edgar VanGilder of Kettering, Ohio, Robert VanGilder of Lexington, VA and Lester VanGilder of Martinsburg; two sisters, Ester Amtower of California and Joy Mossor of Titusville, Florida; and two grandchildren. He had worked as a Health Care Provider and was a veteran of World War II. Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 17th at the Pine Grove Church at Czar with Rev. J.P. Morgan, Jr. and Rev. Born January 14, 1942, in Washington, DC, he was the son of Ellis L. Wilcher and Evelyn Clare Weller Wilcher. Mr. Wilcher had worked as a sales manager and was a member of the Protestant faith. He was formerly owner and operator of Bowmens Hunters Haven at Needmore. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Mary E. Stabler Wilcher of Cobb Island; a daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly A. and Francis Michael Martin III; two sisters, Eva Calloway and Betty Moore; three brothers, Larry Wilcher; Richard Wilcher and David Wilcher; and one grandchild, Amanda Mary Martin. Born in Hardy County, she was the daughter of the late William Whetzel and Rebecca Sites Whetzel. Mrs. Wolfe was retired from Hester Industry and was a member of the Bass United Methodist Church. Besides her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Loring D. Wolfe in 1976, four sisters and one brother. Surviving are her daughter, Elouise Cowger of Moorefield, WV; four sons, Lawrence Wolfe of Kingsport, TN, Ronald Wolfe of Loveland, Ohio, Paul Wolfe of Uniontown, PA, and Clyde Wolfe of Astor, FL; one sister, Esther Harper of Newark, DE; 19 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and one great- great-grandchild. Mr. Wolfe was raised in the Moorefield area. He was born July 10, 1930 at Cass, a son of the late Clifton and Vallie Harper Wolfe. Mr. Wolfe had never married. Surviving are two brothers, Charles W. "Bill" Wolfe, Newport News, VA and Thomas A. "Tom" Wolfe, Killeen, Texas. Mr. Wolfe served in the U.S. Army from 1949 until 1952. He was employed by Nichols Plumbing for the past 39 years. Funeral services were held on Thursday, Feb. 28, at the Whitmer United Methodist Church with the Rev. Earl Bible officiating. Mr. Whitehair was born July 3, 1925, in Meadowbrook, WV, and was the son of the late Jesse J. and Mildred Markley Whitehair. He was also preceded in death by two granddaughters, Evellyn Pesesko and Theresa Lee Whitehair. He was a member of Faith Mission Church and was a World War II Army veteran. He retired after 34 years with Phila Gear Corp. of King of Prussia, PA. On Sept. 11, 1948, he married Evellyn Alkire Whitehair, who survives. Survivors also include three sons, Robert G. Whitehair, Jr., of Chalfont, PA, Paul V. Whitehair, Gore, and Daris J. Whitehair, Easton, PA; four daughters, Sheila S. Anderson, Pottstown, PA, Holly A. Coates, Wardensville, Sherry Kressler, Toms Brook, and Mary Jones, Doylestown, Penn.; 16 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. The funeral was conducted at Faith Mission Church in Wardensville on Saturday by the Rev. Dave Garns. A military graveside service was conducted by the Moorefield Veterans Honor Guard at Greenfield Cemetery in Wardensville.
