Wood, age 90, of Sunnyside Presbyterian Retirement Community, died Monday, July 22, 1996, at Sunnyside in Harrisonburg, VA. Miss Wood was the daughter of the late James Ward and Margaret Hutton Wood and was a member of the Ivanhoe Presbyterian Church. She never married and was the last member of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by four sisters and three brothers. Surviving are several nieces and nephews. Miss Wood was born at Lost River, West Virginia April 14, 1906. She received her elementary school education in the one room school at Lost River. In 1920 she went to live with an older sister, Mrs. D. M. Monroe, and her minister husband in order to attend high school. She graduated in 1923 from Greenbank High School at Greenbank, West Virginia. In the fall of 1923 she went to Red Springs, NC, to attend Flora MacDonald College. This course was interrupted in December 1924 when it became necessary to return home to help her brother, Ward and his wife, care for an invalid mother and aging father. During the summers another sister stayed at home to enable Margaret to attend Shepherd College in order to earn a Teacher's Certificate. She taught school at Lost River and Lost City for six years while caring for her parents at night. In 1931 when another sister came home to help care for the invalid mother, Margaret's dream of becoming a nurse began to be realized. In 1934 she graduated from the Nursing School of The Graduate Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and one year later was on her way to China as a missionary nurse. The war between China and Japan, our entrance into World War II, and the internal strife between Communists and Nationalists in China interrupted the 15 years of missionary service many times. During 1941-1945 here in the States there was opportunity to work for short periods at City Hospital in Elkins, WV, and at Winchester Memorial Hospital in Virginia before going to teach nurses for 18 months at Stillman Institute in Tuscaloosa, Alabama until the end of the war and return to China. When in December of 1950 it was no longer possible to carry on the mission work under the Communists, Margaret returned home much discouraged. By the end of 1951 God had opened other doors to Brazil where she worked for 25 years, first as a nurse, later teaching missionary children and directing small primary schools connected with the churches in areas where three were no state schools at that time. Through help from friends at home, she was able to help several of the lay teachers get a college education. Three of these girls are now teachers in church schools conducted by the Brazilian Church. Margaret came home from Brazil in 1976 and lived at Woodlawn until 1986, when she went to Sunnyside Home in Harrisonburg. A funeral service was held at the Ivanhoe Presbyterian Church, Lost City, WV on Thursday, July 25, with the Rev. John Douglas Sterrett, III, officiating. Burial was in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Lost City, WV. A memorial service was held Monday, July 29 at Sunnyside Home, Harrisonburg, VA, with Rev. James Guthrie and Rev. William Ramkey officiating. Pallbearers were Albert Makowski, J. Allen Wood, Richard Strawderman, James Sager, Robert Stultz, Woodrow Webster. Memorials may be made to either Ivanhoe Presbyterian Church, c/o Elizabeth Webster, Rt. 1, Box 65A1, Mathias, WV 26812 or Sunnyside Home, 100 Sunnyside Dr., Suite A, Harrisonburg, VA 22801.
