   p.580
   JACKSON, GEN. THOMAS JONATHAN ("Stonewall"), born in Harrison county,
   Va., January 21, 1824. Graduated at West Point 1846. As lieutenant of
   artillery participated in main engagements of Mexican war. Professor
   in military institute at Lexington till beginning of Civil war.
   Captured the Federal arsenal at Harper's Ferry May 3, 1861. Commanded
   a brigade in battle of Bull Run. Detached for service in Shenandoah
   Valley, where he forced Banks to retreat to Washington. Repaired to
   Richmond and aided Lee to thwart McClellan's Peninsula movement. Made
   corps commander, and defeated Pope at Cedar Run. Participated in
   second battle of Bull Run. Again captured Harper's Ferry from Union
   forces. Fought in battle of Antietam, and in those of Fredericksburg
   and Chancellorsville. Wounded in latter battle May 2, 1863, and died
   May 10, 1863.
