West Virginia, on November 29, 1829 was a son of Alstorpheus and Martha E. (Martin) Werninger. William married I. Contreras, daughter of Frank and Delores Contreras, at Laguna on the bank of the Colorado River on December 29, 1861. Children: Charles, William A. Jr, Joseph, Martha Augusta, Carmen, Elena (Mrs. Peter Burke) and Ida (Mrs. John Balsz). Mr. Werninger came to Arizona January 20, 1857 and established a ferry across the Colorado River at Providence Point in partnership with W.D. Bradshaw. On the 1860 Arizona Territorial Census he was living at Fort Yuma, occupation merchant. He served as the sheriff of Yuma County from 1875 to 1876 and also served as the first Warden of the Territorial Prison at Yuma. He died on July 5, 1907 at age 77 and is buried in the Catholic Cemetery in Yuma Arizona.
