Westfall in the Virginia Line. He was allowed a Pension on the Roll of Virginia at the rate of $8 per month, to commence on the 18th of May 1818. Certificate of Pension issued the 29th of June 1819 and sent to J. G. Jackson, Esquire, Clarksburg, VA. Arrears to 4th of September 1818, 3 mo 18/30 days $28.17 Semi-anl' all'ee ending 4 March 1819. 48.00 $76.67 Virginia ss: At a Court held for the County of Harrison on the 22nd day of June 1820 being a Court of record established by an act of the general assembly of this Commonwealth personally appeared in open Court Robert Wadsworth aged 70 years, resident in the County of Harrison, Virginia, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath declare that he served in the Revolutionary War as follows: he enlisted in the year 1776 in the 8th Virginia Regiment in the Company of Capt Abel Westfall, Virginia Line, and the his original declaration was made 18th day of May 1818 and the number of his Pension Certificate is 5981. And he also took the following oath viz, "I Robert Wadsworth, do solomly swear that I was a resident citizen of the United States on the 18th day of March one thousand eight hundred and eighteen and that I have not since that time, by gift, sale, or in any manner whatever, disposed of my property, or any part thereof, with interest thereby so to diminish it as to bring myself within the provisions of an act of Congress, entitled "An act to provision for certain persons engaged in the land and naval services of the United States in the Revolutionary War" saith on the eighth day of March one thousand eight hundred and eighteen that I have not, nor has any person in trust for me any property, or securities, contracts or debts, due to me, nor have I any income, other than what is contained in the scheduled herewith annexed and by me subscribed, towit. I own 5 head of horses , 6 cows and 3 calves, 8 one year old calves, 20 head of hogs and pigs, 4 sheep, my household furniture and farming utensials are worth $21. I have due me $14. In am in debt $100.00. Signed Robert Wadsworth and the said Robert also declared as following, viz, "I am by occupation a Cooper, but unable to labour, have six in family viz, myself and children, Robert 16 years old, Jesse 14 years old, Mary 15 years old, Rachel 12 years old, and Nancy 10 years old. Their joint labour would not support them. Robert Wadsworth. Sworn to and declared in open court on the 22 day of June 1820. I John Wilson Junior Clerk of the County Court of Harrison Virginia do hereby certify that the foregoing oath and the schedule thereto annexed and truly copied from the record of the said court, and I do further certify that it is the opinion of the Court that the total amount and value of the property exhibited in the foregoing schedule is two hundred and ten dollars. Jackson, John Reyonlds, Joseph Chureurant, and William A. Rogers, Gentlemen, Justices before the Court aforesaid personally appeared Robert Wadsworth age (blank) years resident in the county and state aforesaid who being duly sworn according to Law dotting on his oath make the following Declaration in order to obtain the provision made by the late act of Congress entittled "An Act to Provisioning for Certain persons engaged in the Land and Naval Forces of the United States in the Revolutionary War". That he the said Robert Wardsworth about in March in the year 1776 enlisted in the war under Captain Abel Westfall on the South Branch of Potomac in the 8th Virginia Regiment. He went to the South, was in the Battle at Charleston, in the Battles of Brandywine and Germantown he served about 3 years and 11 months. He first enlisted for 1 year, before his time was up, he enlisted for 3 years got a discharge which is lost. He was considerable part of the time attached to General Washington Life Guard and that he has no other evidence in his own of his said service and that he is in reduced circumstances and makes of his country for support. It appears to the satisfaction of the Court that Robert Wardsworth served in the Revolutionary War agt the common enemy and from the Declaration hereforth and their belief in it with from examination of the said Robert before the court and his standing as a good Citizen in this County. It is ordered that the said declaration with the Opinion of this court was certified to the honorable Secretary of War. The court being fully satisfied that the said Robert did serve more than nine months in the Army of the United States agt the common enemy and that he is in reduced circumstances said the opinion of this court for support. Wadsworth Muncie, Indiana Dear Sir: Reference is made to your request for the Revolutionary War record of Robert Wadsworth. The data which follow were obtained from papers on file in the pension claim S. 41296, based upon the military service of Robert Wadsworth. He enlisted on the south branch of the Potomac River, the exact place not stated, in March, 1776, as private in Captain Abel Westfall's company in the Eighth Virginia Regiment, served three years and eleven months, was in the battle of Brandywine, Germantown and Charleston, and during a part of the time was attached to General Washington's Life Guard. He was allowed pension on his application executed May 18, 1819, at which time he was living in Harrison County, Virginia. In 1820 he was seventy years of age and he then referred to the following children: Robert, Mary, Jesse, Rachel and Nancy, aged sixteen, fifteen, fourteen, twelve, and ten years, respectively. He did not give the name of his wife. Personally appears before the court aforesaid Robert Wadsworth aged 70 years resident in the county of Harrison VA who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath declare that he served in the revolutionary was as follows he enlisted in the year 1776 in the 8th Virginia Regiment in the company of Capt Abel Westfall Virginia Line. Viz. The whole of my property has been seized for rent and if sold will not pay the amount claimed $150. Robert Wadsworth and the said Robert further declared as following. I am by occupation a cooper but unable to labor. I have in family 6 persons, myself, my son Robert 16 years of age, Jesse 14 years, Mary 15 years, Rachel 12 years, and Nancy 10 years of age . Their joint labour will not support them. It seems he was in the 8th Va. Regiment, under a Captain Westfall. On some of our papers it refers to "I.C.S. Survivors File #41296, Rev. War. VA (then Va,) was a pensioner as a soldier of the Revolution at any time from 1818 to 1831. I also wish to know if Joshua Jones (S.20,895)was also a pensioner of the Revolution from Harrison Co. at any time from 1818 to 1840. Wadsworth died near Shinston in said county in or about 1821 and Jones died near Fairmont in said county near or about 1840. I would also like to have a synoposis of the important facts about Jones as they appear on the records of your office. Where he was born and when he enlisted in the army and under whom he served. Washington Life Guard part of the time; Battles engaged in: B randywine, Germantown, Charleston; Residence of soldier at enlistment: Enlisted on South Branch of Potomac River; Date of Application for P ension: May 18, 1818 - His claim was allowed; Residence at Date of Application: Harrison Co, VA; Age at Date of Application: sixty-eight years; Remarks: in 1820 he stated that the had six in his family - himself & children: Robert age 16 yrs, Mary 15 yrs, Jesse 14 yrs, Rachel 12 yrs, and Nancy 10 yrs. No reference to wife. Rev and 1812 Wars Section May 3, 1925 A. E. Wadsworth Shinton, West VA Sir: I have to advise you that from the papers in the Revolutionary War pension claim S. 41296 it appears that Robert Wadsworth enlisted on the south branch of the Potomac River, the exact place not stated, in March 1776, as a private in Captain Abel Westfall's Company in the Eighth Virginia Regiment, served three years and eleven months, was in the battles of Brandywine, Germantown and Charleston, and during a part of the time was attached to General Washington's Life Guard. He was allowed pension on his application executed May 18, 1818 while a resident of Harrison County, Virginia. In 1820 his was aged seventy years and referred to his children - Robert, Mary, Jesse, Rachel and Nancy aged sixteen, fifteen, fourteen, twelve and ten years respectively. No reference to his wife. The above noted is the only soldier named Robert Wadsworth found on the Revolutionary War records of this Bureau. Respectively, Wilder S. Metcalf, Commissioner Clarksburg 22 Febry 1821 Sir: I take the liberty of enclosing to you Mr. R. Wadsworth declaration who was formerly on the pension list but stricken off for having put to much property in his schedule altho he at the time owed as much or more than he was worth, he is also old and infirm unable to labour and he labors under a complaint similar to a rupture of which you have knowledge. If you present, the old man says you examined him last fall - it will therefore do him a great favor to his claims to the Secretary at War in person & urge his right - I have no of __ him the __.
