(Pappy) FLYNN, 82, of 302 Lincoln St., Broad Oaks, retired manager of the G. C. Murphy Company, died in a Wheeling hospital at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 28, following an extended illness. He was born Dec. 23, 1898, at Good Intent, Pa., a son of the late M. J. and Mary Jane (sic) SPROWLS FLYNN. He is survived by his wife, Alma Mae SWANEY FLYNN, whom he married April 10, 1923. In the fall of 1919, R. S. FLYNN joined the J. G. McCrory Co. in Washington, Pa. and advanced in that company to the post of store manager in Marietta, Ohio. He later moved to Pittsburgh and also served as merchandise manager in Chicago and Atlantic City. In 1930, he began a 35-year career with the G. C. Murphy Company and became manager of the local store June 1, 1931. He retired Jan. 30, 1965, from the local store which had become known to many area residents as “Pappy” FLYNN’s store. He was a veteran of World War I and was always particularly proud of having served in the famous 28th Division of Pennsylvania. He was a member of the Roy E. PARRISH Post 13, American Legion, the local Barracks of World War I Veterans, the Forty and Eight, Meuse-Argonne Post 573, VFW, and Clarksburg Lodge 482, BPOElks. He was also a member of the G. C. Murphy Veterans Club. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Donald H. (Joanne) MAHLKE, Wheeling; a daughter-in-law, Mary Sue BOLTON FLYNN, Algonquin, Ill.; one sister, Mrs. John (Bessie) PATTERSON, Beaver Falls, Pa.; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A son, Russell FLYNN Jr., died July 2 as a result of injuries received in an automobile accident in Illinois. Two brothers, Cecil and Morford, also preceded him in death. Friends are being received after 7 p.m. today at the DAVIS-WEAVER Funeral Home, East Main Street. (Joanne) MAHLKE, Wheeling, WV, a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Mary Sue BOLTON FLYNN, Algonquin, IL, one sister, Mrs. John (Bessie) PATTERSON, Beaver Falls, PA, ten grandchildren, Carol ERB, Susan HAMILTON, Donald MAHLKE Jr., Cheryl SCORDATA (sic), Debbie LANG, Stephen FLYNN, Dianne FLYNN, Linda FLYNN, Susan FLYNN and Michael FLYNN and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Russell FLYNN Jr., and by two brothers, Cecil and Morford FLYNN. Mr. FLYNN was a Veteran of World War I, a member of Clarksburg American Legion, V. F. W., W. W. I Veterans and the “Forty & Eight”. He was also a member of the G. C. Murphy Veterans Club and the Clarksburg Elks. Friends may call at the DAVIS-WEAVER Funeral Home, 329 E. Main St. after 7:00 o’clock p.m. Monday, where funeral services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 31 at 2:00 o’clock p.m. The Rev. Dewayne LOWTHER will conduct the service.
