BENJAMIN HOLDEN'S WILL (Age 61) HARRISON COUNTY, VIRGINIA WILL BOOK 4, P. 426 1831 In the name of God, Amen, I BENJAMIN HOLDEN of Harrison County Virginia being sick and weak in body but of sound mind and disposing memory for which I thank God and calling to mind the uncertainty of human life and being desirous to repose of all such worldly estate it hath pleased God to bless me with 1st I give and bequeath my body to the grave and my soul to God who gave it to rest in hope of a glorious immortality in the morning of the resurrection and the rest of my estate in the manner following that is to say I give after the payment of all my debts and funeral expenses I give to my wife, MARGARET HOLDEN exclusively of her legal dowery forty dollars to be paid and of any monies in hand or may be due me by notes to be hers during her natural life. 2ndly I give my son CHARLES HOLDEN in addition to his braid to him and his heirs the sum of fifty dollars in a horse not exceeding eight years old at a fair price at the valuation of two disinterested men payable two years after my decease 3rdly I give to my son ALEXANDER C. HOLDEN to him and to his heirs all notes and accounts due me him at my decease under consideration that he shall pay to the heirs viz to my daughter AROMINER ten dollars in Cattle at a fair price at the valuation of two disinterested men two years after my decease and to my son WILLIAM HOLDEN deceased to his two heirs viz JUDSON Holden and SARAH E. Holden the sums annext to their names. 4thly I lent to my son PETER W. HOLDEN three fifty dollar notes on William Hugill which notes called for one charitable cattle and horses out or to Chick notes viz my wish that he pays to my son CHARLES HOLDEN the sum of fifty dollars in like property and after a settlement with my Executors and whatever ballance if any I give to him and his heirs forever. 5thly I give to my son BENJAMIN HOLDEN the upper or supposed half of the farm upon which I now live to him and his heirs forever lying on Turkey run in Harrison County Virginia the said half viz above my dwelling house bounded by a line hereinafter described viz begining at a hickory marked B H C on my back easter line running a strate line down the hill to a poplar tree marked standing on the road side leading to Browns creek thence corning and running up the road along the medow fence thirty four pannel to a stake thence corning and croping the uper medow to a stake at the fence back of the barn corning and runing thirteen pannels toward the house to a saffras, corning thence running up the fence between the back and house field to a locus thence a strate line to the sentre of my Northwesterly line I give to him I give to him my family Bible and magaxines unconsideration that he shall pay to the heirs of my daughter GRACE HOLDEN deceased viz to LEWIS HOLDEN fourty dollars in a horse not exceeding eight years old and to SARRAH HOLDEN ten dollars in cattle at the age of twenty one years, and to my son PEARSON HOLDEN fifty dollars in a Horse not exceeding eight years old two years after my decease all the above at a fair price and at the valuation of two disinterested men. 6thly I give to my son THOMAS S. HOLDEN and his heirs forever the lower part or suppose half of the farm on which I now live in including the dwelling House lying on Turkey Run in Harrison County Virginia bounded by a line herein after described viz Running with BENJAMIN'S line and including the ballance of the said tract of two hundred & twenty one acres and in addition to the above the black horse a cow a bed and beddingdesk a pair of geese two hoes and on a under consideration that he shall keep his sister JEMINA HOLDEN in his house and support her in a comfortable farmer like family like manner as long as she shall remain unmaried but should the said JEMINA mary in one year or sooner after my deceased the said THOMAS is to pay to the said JEMINA the sum of thirty dollars in cattle at a fair price at the valuation or two disinterested men two years after my decease. 7thly I give to the heirs of my son WILLIAM HOLDEN deceased viz to JUDSON Holden fourty dollars in a horse or cattle and to SARAH E. HOLDEN ten dollars in cattle, the above both at fair prices at the valuation of two disinterested men at the age of twenty one years. 8thly I give to my son PEARSON HOLDEN and his heirs in addition to his braid fifty dollars in a horse at a fair price at the valuation of two disinterested men payable two years after my decease. 9thly to my daughter SARAH EVERET deceased who received her protion before her death but in addition I give to her son BENJAMIN Everet five dollars out my personal property at the age of twenty one. 10thly I give to my daughter AROMINER COTTRELL in addition to what she has received ten dollars in Cattle at a fair price at the valuation of two disinterested man two after my deceased and also a chest at my decease and all notes and accounts due me by her husband at a settlement with my Executors and then to be given up. 11thly I give to my daughter JEMINA HOLDEN sixty dollars in such articles as remain in the cupboards house hold and kitchen furniture a cow and calf Bedstead bed and bedding a loom and a should be at my decease. 12thly I give to the heirs of my daughter GRACE HOLDEN deceased viz to LEWIS Holden forty dollars in a horse and SARAH Holden ten dollars in Cattle the above both to be at a fair price at the valuation of two disinterested men at the age of twenty-one years. 13thly All the rest of my estate real and personal of what nature or kind soever it may be not herein before particularly disposed of I desire may be sold at a private sale or so mutch of it as will discharge all my legal claims against my estate and to inclose the graves of dead of my family together with plane tombstones and the ballance if any to my son THOMAS HOLDEN. And lastly I do hereby constitute appoint my friends John Allen and my son ALEX C. HOLDEN executors of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all other or former wills or testaments by me heretofore made In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 9th day of November in of our Lord 1831.
