In which case the said commissioner in his letter to her attorney - dated January 14th 1879. States that there is in the different papers such discrepancy in the Spelling of the Surname of the Claiment that she is required to forward a Statement over her own Signature Showing the correct Orthography of her Surname To which requirement she States that her true name is MARTHA (X) faded Witness my hand this 27th day of February AD 1879 x faded X faded x State of Virginia, Upshur County } On this 4 day of Dec AD 1852 personally appeared before me.....the aforesaid MATILDA REA aged 49 years a resident of Upshur County ....declare that she is well acquainted with MARTHA MLAIN Widow of WILLIAM MLAIN deceased of Lewis County who was formerly a resident of Albemarle County Va. that she was present at the marriage of the Said WILLIAM McLAIN to the Said MARTHA who name before his said marriage was MARTHA GRAVES that they was married at ALEX TOMMs - in Albemarle County on or about the 16th day of December 1817 by the Rev. Benj Brady a Babtist pracher and further states that the Said WILLIAM McLAIN died on the West fork of the Monnongali River in Lewis County on or about the 3rd day of July 1849 and that the said MARTHA MLAIN is still a widow. /s/ MATILDA (X) REA. BENNITT, GEORGE ARMSTRONG State of Virginia, County of Upshur } SS On this 11th day of November AD one thousand eight hundred and fifty two personally appeared...MARTHA MCLAIN aged 52 years a resident of Lewis County who ......declares that she is the widow of WILLIAM McLAIN deceased who was a private in the company commanded by Captain WM. C. SCOTT in the 8th Regiment of Virginia Militia commanded by Henry Dawson in the war with Great Britain....that her said husband was drafted at Nelson County Virginia on or about the 18th day of August AD 1814 for the term of six months and continued in actual service in said war for the term of six month and was honorably discharged at Camp Carter on the 18th day of February AD 1815....that her said husband died at Lewis County Va on the 3rd day of July AD 1849 and that she is still a widow......../s/ MARTHA (X) McLAIN.
