The History of Harvey's Creek Cemetery HARVEY'S CREEK CEMETERY The Harvey's Creek Cemetery was started around 1888, with a purchase of land from Martin Ashworth and A. P. Ashworth by B. F. McGhee, James Broad Burton, and Thomas "Tom" Hall, trustees, as a cemetery for the sum of seven dollars and ninty-five cents ($7.95) to be used as a public burying ground. Many traditions, customs and ideas have been passed down to us and we, the present trustees, decided it would be wise of us to gather as many of these as possible and compile them for future generations before many more of our senior citizens were gone and there was no one left to tell us about them. Realizing as time marches forward it will become harder if not impossible to gather this local information from older people living in the community. The first person buried in the cemetery was Millie Ashworth whose graveside services were conducted by Rev. William Snodgrass, a carpenter by trade, who at that time was building the Harvey's Creek Church. This service was conducted sometime during the year of 1888. It is said that Rev. Snodgrass started the services by placing his hand upon the coffin and saying, "men and brethern." The earliest dated monument in the cemetery is that of Mrs. S. A. Jackson, 1893, wife of John Jackson, yet there are several graves dated around 1900 with family Bible record to confirm these dates. Many graves have no dated monuments, therefore in some instances after the Lincoln County Court House burned old death records were not recorded. In some instances there are no known family members living in our area at the present time that could be contacted for this information. Many of the neighbors in the community helped build coffins or supplied lumber for that purpose but such people as James "Jim" McGhee, Meredith Jackson, and John Thompson were noted for their skills in making coffins. Calvin N. Hall and Floyd Wiblen's services were in great demand in preparing and dressing the bodies for burial. However, around the turn of the century "store bought" coffins were being used by several people in the community. Store bought coffins either of wood or plush covered could be purchased at McGhee's General Store located at the mouth of Harvey's Creek, Simon Johnson's General store in Hamlin, and Allen's Mercantile in Hurricane. Later Simon Johnson and Samuel "Monty" Koontz started the Johnson Koontz Funeral Home which is known today as the Koontz Funeral Home while Allen's Mercantile became known as Allen Funeral Home in Hurricane. In the early 1920'a funeral directors started coming to the residences and preparing the bodies for burial. They brought with them the funeral home "plush" caskets which were the forerunners of our modern day caskets. Many funeral services were conducted in the Harvey's Creek School House, and the last such adult service was that of Mrs. Lillie Burton Lewis, in February of 1944, by the Rev. Homer Curry. Many graveside services have been conducted in the cemetery and yet today that of infants or stillborn children are sometimes conducted. The last graveside service for an adult was that of Laura Lewis in November of 1951, by the Rev. Homer Curry. Regardless of where the services were conducted, it was done with great sincerity and a forward look toward that great resurrection morning with faith in God that all will be made well. During the flu epidemic in 1918, people were dying faster than they could he buried, and many were taken to the Harvey's Creek School House to await their turn for burial. Due to so many people having the flu it was extremely hard to get graves dug fast enough to bury the dead. In fact, help was so short that Bunn Hale helped carry the body of his wife, Ella Jackson Hale, to her final resting place in the cemetery. Before the advent of either steel or concrete vaults, graves were dug larger at the top and the bottoms were dug to fit the coffin and wooden box thus creating a grave vault. After the coffin was lowered into the wooden box, boards were placed crosswise across the box and on the sides of the grave thus creating the forerunner of the modern day vault. The first steel vault used in the cemetery was for the burial of Barbara J. Smith Dillon, July 3, 1932. Up until the mid nineteen fifties, "Decoration" was something looked forward to as a special service at the cemetery. It was a time not only to decorate the graves of loved ones but a time for visitation among family and friends as well as to participate in memorial services conducted by the Odd Fellows or Red Men lodges as well as the christian memorial worship service which was held in the afternoon around two o'clock on the cemetery hill by a local minister if the weather permitted. Sometimes the memorial service was held in the school house due to inclement weather conditions. About every man in our community has volunteered in helping dig graves, not only at the Harvey's Creek Cemetery but at other cemeteries in our community as well. Today it is sometimes difficult, if not impossible, to find someone to dig the grave. As a result families are forced to pay to have this done by someone employed by the attending funeral home. Customs have changed since the early 1940's and now our loved ones are taken to local funeral homes where their bodies are prepared for burial. Some families still prefer to have the bodies returned to the home, while others leave the bodies at the funeral home where visitation is conducted. Funerals today are usually conducted at the funeral home or a church while some still are conducted in private homes or at the graveside, if this is the preference of the family. This cemetery contains the remains of Civil War veterans of both Yankee and Confederate armies, World War I veterans, those killed in World War II and those killed in the Vietnam Conflict. Trustees of the Harvey's Creek Cemetery have been: B. F. McGhee, James Broad Burton, Thomas "Tom" Hall, Oscar Salmons, James W. Pack. Present trustees are: Elmer Curry, Dail Sergent, Billy Burton, Larry J. Bays and Junior Curry. It was not our intentions to have slighted anyone or any family who has someone buried in the Harvey's Creek Cemetery. If we have left out some one, misspelled a name, or have errors in dates please forgive us because compiling this information was a monumental task which took many hours of hard work. We wish to thank everyone for being so helpful, understanding and considerate to us while we were trying to gather this almost unknown information. We are sure that we did not name all the people buried in the cemetery, but they are like the unknown soldiers buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, D. C., "They are known to God." As one walks through the cemetery, one is reminded of many things. In reality it is like walking through a city, a city of the dead where [end of available text] PROGRESS SUMMATION In the summer of 1980-1981, over three hundred limestone cinder blocks have been placed at graves in the cemetery having no monument. It is the trustees' intentions of having all known graves in the cemetery marked by Memorial Day 1982. A new lawnmower has been purchased plus a motor for another mower. These are used in the summer time to help maintain the appearance of the cemetery. In the early summer of 1980, twenty tons of limestone gravel were placed on the hearse driveway at the side entrance of the cemetery, thus making access into the cemetery much easier for all families regardless of weather conditions. All of this was made possible by your freewill contributions to the cemetery. All monies received during the last three years have been used for maintenance and upkeep on the cemetery not only on things previously mentioned, but the sign in front of the cemetery as well as painting wells and roof of building where supplies are kept. All work at the cemetery has been done by people who have given of their time and energy to make the cemetery a place of pride, a place of honor and a living memorial that someone still cares. We, the trustees of the Harvey's Creek Cemetery, urge each of you to help us in maintaining the cemetery by helping with your support, in helping to keep the cemetery clean at all times, removing old flowers from the graves, as well as various pasteboard and metal containers. Remember, those people who volunteer in helping mow the cemetery do not wish to hurt someone by throwing a wire through their lawn mower nor do they wish to be hurt. Time spent in removing old flowers from graves could be used in mowing other graves. By doing this it makes safety for all more relevant and removes dangerous health hazards before they become permanent injuries. We, the trustees of the Cemetery thank each of you for your help in the past and we depend upon all of you in the future in helping mow the Harvey's Creek Cemetery and keep it a place where all of us can be proud.
