Submitted by Peggy Miller, , April 1999 ************************************************************************** This was taken from an article published about 1879 based on the age of Rebeca Davis Cartright at the time this was written. It was published in a copy of Marion County Genealogical Gleenings, the issue was not noted. This was found by another researcher, I was only given a copy. I have found the marriage of Rebecca Davis (daughter of Isaac Davis) to Jacob Cartright at the Court House in Morgantown, Monongalia Co., West Virginia. Thornton is also listed in his father Jacob's will. Jacob, was the brother of Isaac Cartwright, my 3rd great grandfather. It certainly has a lot of information and is a valuable research tool for any descendants of this family. We have found nothing to prove the relationship that is noted, concerning Peter Cartwright. Thornton F. Cartright: Born in Monongalia County, January 9, 1826, has lived in what is now Marion County since he was twenty years of age, and is one of the substantial farming residents of Mannington District. He married Nancy Kerns, who was born in Monongalia County, June 19, 1827. Their marriage was solemnized in Mannington District, March 22, 1847, and its eleven children are recorded: John J., born December 8, 1847, married Martha L. Cunningham, and lives in this District; Clarissa E., born March 27, 1848, married Eli Kendall, and resides in St. John, Stafford County, Kansas; Joseph E., born October 25, 1851, married Helen Satterfield, and lives in this District; Maria Frances, born October 1, 1853, married William S. Snodgrass and lives in Mannington District; Rebecca, born October 6, 1855, died February 20, 1865; James B., born June 19, 1858, is deceased; J. C., born February 1, 1860, is in Kansas; Thomas M., born December 19, 1862, lives at home; Peter, born October 12, 1863, died January 18, 1866; Melissa J., born August 24, 1866, lives at home; Louisa M., born June 23, 1867, died October 12, 1876; Jacob Cartright, now deceased, the father of Thornton F., was a native of Delaware and was a nephew of the celebrated circuit-rider, Peter Cartright. The mother of Thornton F. was Rebecca, daughter of Isaac Davis, she is now living in Monongalia county, at the age of 73 years. Her father was a soldier of the Revolution, serving two years in the infantry, under Washington. John J. and Rebecca (South) Kerns, the parents of Mrs. Cartright, came from Greene County, Pennsylvania. Her father is deceased, her mother living at the age of 89. Thornton F. Cartright was drafted for service in the last year of the Civil War, but reported at Washington the day after Lincoln's assassination, and was discharged. John J., the oldest son was seven months in the service. Thornton F. Cartright's post office address is Mannington, Marion County, West Virginia.
