His father, Joseph Hayhurst, was a native of this section of country, and settled a large tract of land, part of it the same the son now is cultivating, and he was a son of David and Sarah (Warner) Hayhurst. He served six months as a volunteer in the 1812 war, and received honorable discharge. His wife, mother of John David, was Elizabeth, daughter of John and Jane (Wilson) Price, of Maryland. The Wilsons and Prices were of German descent, and the Hayhursts were residents for two generations of Maryland. In Mannington district, September 7, 1856, John D. Hayhurst and Rebecca Higgenbotham were joined in the bands of wedlock. She was born near Pine Grove, in that part of Tyler county, Virginia, now included in Wetzel county, West Virginia, November 26, 1834. William and Sabra (Snodgrass) Higginbotham were her parents, her father, born in Pennsylvania, a son of William and Sarah (Watson) Higginbotham, and her mother, born in Virginia, a daughter of William and Betsey (Raymond) Snodgrass. The Snodgrass family were originally from Ireland, and Mrs. Hayhurst's Grandmother Watson was a daughter of George Wilson, who made the first settlement in what is now Mannington district, two miles from the present town of Mannington. They were from Pennsylvania. John D. Hayhurst was converted on Friday and joined the Methodist Episcopal Church (South) on Sunday, March 22, 1868, and has been a class-leader for eight years past, and still holds the office acceptably to the people.
