She was born in Fairmont on July 11, 1931, a daughter of the late Glenn Arlie and Laura Janet Swisher Carpenter. She graduated from East Fairmont High School and Fairmont State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in education and a minor in music. She retired from Verizon, having worked for more than 15 years as an operator for AT&T and C&P as well as Verizon. In addition, she was a piano teacher for many years at the YWCA in Pleasant Valley. She was a member and music director of the Kingmont United Methodist Church. She also played the piano and organ for the Meadowdale United Methodist H & H Chapel. Jackie led an extremely active and giving life. She was a member of the Woman’s Club of Fairmont, the Marion County Historical Society, the Pricketts Fort Foundation, the Kingmont Community Association, the local dulcimer group and the Friends of the Library. Her hobbies included collecting frogs and limited edition plates. Friends and family will remember Jackie for the love she had for her family, her music, her many friends and her cats and her service to the community. She is survived by her loving husband of 53 years, William Meighan; her sons, William Meighan Jr. of Fairmont, Robert Meighan and his wife Kim of Florida, Terry Meighan and his wife Brandi of Fairmont, Thomas Meighan and his wife Marcy of New York; her brother, Glenn David Carpenter and his wife Karen of Hopewell Community; her sister, Glenda Hardway and her husband Delbert of Hopewell Community; a sister-in-law, Frances Meighan of Freeport, Pa.; her very special grandchildren, Kathleen Meighan, Melanie Meighan, Eduard Meighan, Thomas Meighan and Bayli Meighan; and her nieces and nephews, Jon Hardway, Kimberly Wells, Laura Lee Swisher, Sara Beth Carpenter, Davey Carpenter, Greg Meighan, Alan Meighan and Ricki Ann Meighan. She will be deeply missed by her many friends, including her lifelong friend, Peggy Metz of New Mexico. Friends may call at Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., from 6 to 9 p.m. today, from noon to 8 p.m. Monday and from 11a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home at 1 p.m. Tuesday with the Rev. Gary Steele and the Rev. Frederick Heitzenroder officiating.
