Biography of William M. Cundiff (1879-1941) William Cundiff was born near Roanoke Virginia in 1879. As a young man he came to McDowell County, WVA and went to work for Peerless Coal and Coke. He met his wife, Jessie Myrtle Morris (b. May 3, 1891 d. July 14, 1988) in Vivian where he attended school to learn to read and write and she was the teacher. They were married on May 1, 1916 in Roanoke Virginia. The marriage license indicates that he worked in the Coal Mines in the Signal Service. I know very little about my Grandfather as my Grandmother refused to even speak his name. We know that my Grandmother left the McDowell County area around 1922 and remarried around 1926. They had one daughther, Helen Elizabeth Cundiff on April 20, 1918 at Vivian West Virginia. William's parents were Mathew or M.J. Cundiff (b. 1847) and Amanda Musselman (b. 1856 d. 11-23-1891) Cundiff. Mathew was born in Franklin County, VA to Eli Cundiff (b. circa 1812) and Rebecca Howell (b. circa 1814). Amanda Mussleman was born in Montgomery County Virginia to Joseph and Louisa Edwards (d. May 1, 1878) Musselman. Helen E. Cundiff married twice, first to Lester Ray Robinson on Feb 8, 1935. They had one child, Richard James Robinson born in Centre Belpre, Ohio. She married second Lyle White Stewart on Dec. 21, 1941 and had one daughter, Margaret Eileen Stewart born in Liberal, Seward County, Kansas. William Cundiff died Jan. 17, 1941 at Welch Emergency Hospital and is buried at the Mohegan Cemetery, near Davey, West Virginia. I know very little about my grandfather and if anyone has any information or just knew him, I would love to communicate with them. Submitted by Margaret E.
