Angel of Vivian, secretary of the Tidewater Coal and Coke Company, was in the city yesterday on route home from a visit to relatives and friends in Giles County. * E. H. Suhdoth, J. F. Beavers, W. H. Stokes and James A. Strother came up from Welch yesterday and will leave today to attend the Elks' Carnival at Eggleston Springs. * The Elks will hold a High Carnival at Eggleston Springs today. The train will leave Bluefield at 10:00 a. m. A number of Elks from the coal field are in the city and many more will arrive on No. 4 this morning. As the Elks never do anything by halves, a pleasant time is assured by all who attend. In magistrate's court yesterday some of the inmates, managers, proprietreuses and other high functionaries at the hash houses over the tenpin alley on Higginbotham avenue (Bluefield) were trying to explain that they were not running a house of ill fame. The evidence of Thos. Mills, the husband of a woman accused, tended to show that it was a house of ill fame, but his evidence was ruled out under the law that a husband cannot testify against the wife in a criminal charge. ----------------AD----------------- 1000 Men Wanted. 1000. Lennon of Botetourt County, Va., spent yesterday with Bluefield friends and left on No. 8 last night for Welch to visit his brother-in-law, C. B. Hudson. . . . the Bluefield Iron Works is the city's largest manufacturing plant and gives employment to more men than any other concern outside of the railroad, and with some exception, does the city more good than any other concern. They turn out excellent work and not only compete with firms in other sections but set the pace. Now it would seem every coal operator and mill man in the entire section should give Bluefield Iron Works their patronage, because of its location the the benefit it is to the community. * Dr. S. A. Daniel was up from Welch yesterday. * Judge and Mrs. David E. Johnston spent yesterday at Ennis, the guests of their daughter, Mrs. Dr. F. L. A.
