Smith Wedding Anniversary, 1969 - McDowell Co. WV (Newspaper Unknown) "Elbert Couple Celebrates Golden Wedding Anniversary" Mr. and Mrs. Walter J. Smith, Sr., of Elbert observed their golden wedding anniversary at their home on January 12 with a celebration hosted by their children. The afternoon's guest list included Mr. and Mrs. Steve Nameth, John Troy, Mr. and Mrs. M.C. Friel, James Swartz, Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Sheppard, Mr. and Mrs. Martin Hayduk, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Stone, Mr. and Mrs. Pete Shaffron, Mr. and Mrs. David Myers, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Gearing, the Rev. S.A.F. Wagner; Mr. and Mrs. Joe Barta, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Heizer, Mrs. Vernon Farmer, Theresa Lane, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Smith, Brad and Lisa, the Rev. John E. Smith, Thomas E. Smith, Kenneth D. Smith, Mrs. Roger Evans, and Mr. and Mrs. Walter J. Smith, Jr. Friends who sent gifts but did not attend were Mrs. Dave Lane, Mrs. Dorothy Farley, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Blevins, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Lupyon, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Dickersen, Mrs. Susan Boardwine, and Mr. and Mrs. Herman Moore. The Smiths were married January 13, 1919, at Bristol, Tenn., by the Rev. Scattergood. Mr. and Mrs. Smith have six living children. The five sons are Walter J., Jr., of Gary; Ralph of Bluefield; the Rev. John E. of Clarksburg; Charles with the U.S. Air Force in Spain; and William with the U.S. Army in Germany. The daughter is Mrs. Roger (Oreda) Evans of Central Islip, N.Y. There are 20 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Mr. Smith has been barbering in Elbert and Gary since 1917. They have lived in Elbert and Filbert since their marriage and are members of the Filbert United Methodist Church.
