Death of Kenneth Edward Sheffey, native of McDowell County, W. Va. Contents from newspaper article dated April 6,I962. Submitted by Fay Shannon" A 25 year old Henry County, Va. man was enroute to his Grandmother's funeral, became McDowell County's sixth hightway fatality of the year,and his wife was injured last night when their car and truck crashed on U.S.52 near Norhtfork.The county recorded only eight traffic deaths throughout 1961. State Police in Welch identified the Victim as Kenneth Edward Sheffey,25,of Bassett,Va. He was driving one vehicle, and was killed instantly. In the car with him was his wife, Alma Sheffey, 25 and their infant son. Mrs Sheffey suffered an injured forehead and was hospitalized at Stevens Clinic in Welch, but her hurts were not considered serious. The child apparently unhurt was hospitalized with the Mother. The accident occured on the top of the hill on U.S. 52 at the outskirts of Northfork about 6:PM.State Troopers said their investigation revealed that Sheffey driving West into Northfork, was enroute to Benett Funeral Home where funeral arrangements were being made for his Grandmother, Mrs Margaret Honaker Sheffey of Eckman, W.Va. A tractor-trailor owned by Virginia-Carolina Freight Lines and driven by Billy K. Wood of Winston Salen, N. C. was traveling east out of Northfork at the same time. The car the Troopers said, swerved as it topped the hill and went into an embankment, slammed back into the highway sideways and the two vehicles collided. The 1955 auto was demolished, some pieces being tossed 150 yards away. Damage to the truck has not been estimated but the trucker and an unidentified helper were unhurt. State Police Corporal B. H. Cassell and Trooper Paule Gyke investigated. The body of the victim was taken to Bennett Funeral Home in Northfork,where funeral arrangements, including those for his Grandmother remain incomplete. *Note by submitter* Kenneth Edward Sheffey known as "Kenney" was the son of Robert Winton Sheffey and Karleen Elizabeth Shannon, having been born on 1/8/1937. Kenney had one sister, Joy Lee Miller of Portsmouth, Ohio, and one brother, James Leon Sheffey known as Jimmie Holloway of Eckman, W.Va. He was the Grandson of Clarence Edward Shannon of Keystone,W.Va. Kenney died not knowing that his Grandmother had died, but that she was critically ill and all the family had been notified and he was on his way to her home. He and his Grandmother are buried at Woodlawn Memorial Park, Bluewell, W.Va. His son, Steve now grown lives in Orlando,Florida with his wife Heidi and their 3 sons, Steven, Preston, and Parker.
