Truly yours, Braden A Abbott --------------------------------------------------------------------- State of West Virginia, County of Lincoln, SS: In the matter of the application for pension of Braden A Abbott on this 22 day of Sept AD one thousand eight hundred and ninety nine, personally appeared before me, a notary public in and for the aforesaid county, duly authorized to administer oaths Braden A Abbott , aged 64 years, a resident of Bernie in the County of Lincoln and State of WVa whose Post Office address is Bernie Wva, well known to me to be respectable and entitled to credit, and who being duly sworn declare in relation to the aforesaid cae as follows: That: As for the direct or immediate cause of hernia I could not be positive. But I will relate a circumstance which I think caused hernia on the 25 day of Sept 1861. I was one of the first men to climb the Behel Breast Works and in the charge I had to charge through a tree top prepared by them with the limbs cut off and sharped so as to protect them. After the charge was made and the fort was taken I found I was wounded in the left groin ranging toward the hip joing. There wa a hole in my groin and I bled some. I thought I had got snaged with a limb on that tree as we had made the charge. One reason I made no complaint to the doctor was there was but one man other than my self of my Co in that charge, it being the 34 Ohio reg making that raid and I thought if I complained I would be operated on and left there by my self the thoughts of which I could not stand as long as I could walk. I do not know any names of the 34 Ohio reg except two that was in the advance guard by the name of Moody and Red. I do not know but those were nicknames. They both saw the wound. I told them it was a snag and they both said it was a spent ball. This wound never healed up and continued to run bloody water until after I had the mumps at Buffalo in the winter of 1861 at Spring of 1862 after which time the wound healed up. The first of May 1862 not thinking or expecting any thing like hernia I never examined for anything of that kind although I suffered all the time with my groin and hip. My hip presently gave way on me. After I did see it I thought it was a wind or something of that kind. The reson I was with the 34 Ohio Reg was I was sent as a pilot to go in the advance guard as none of that reg knew the county and I knew it well. We started from Camp Riat in the Kanawha valley.
