From the intersection of Rt. 29 and Rt. 27, at Jakes Run, go .6 mile on Rt. 27, and turn right up a dirt road. Go .2 mile and make another right. The cemetery is .1 mile on the right side of the road, about 20 feet from the road. It can be seen easily. Footstone: Son of Liberty, Peter Tennant, was born February 25, AD 1773 On the South Branch of the Potomac River in Hardy Co. Virginia Tennant, Elizabeth Brown - w/o Peter Tennant, September, 1774 ~ June 2, 1867 On each side of Elizabeth, is a stone for her husband, Peter. The second stone reads: Tennant, Peter - born February 25, 1773, On the south branch of the Potomac River in Hardy Co, Va. died January 29, 1847, aged 73 year, 11 month and 1 day "Remember man as you pass by..........." Tennant, Nimrod - August 30, 1802 ~ February 28, 1875 "We mourn for thee, but not hopeless, Though deaths dark river thou hast crossed, Faith to our hearts whispers sweetly, That thou are only gone, not lost." Tennant, Catherine - w/o Nimrod Tennant, daughter of Jacob J. Moore, married to Nimrod Tennant January 16, 1823 and departed this life September 22 AD 1828, aged 23y and 25d "Emblem of joy, she's gone, And joined her friends below" Tennant, Emella - born February 29, 1812, married July 25, 1830, deceased August 19, 1881 "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith" Tennant, Naomi - June 7, 1831 ~ January 21, 1895 Tennant, Malinda - July 26, 1839 ~ May 29, 1914 "Lovely flowers raise my thoughts, From earth to that bright shore, Where loved ones will welcome me, And we will part no more" Tennant, Elizabeth - October 3, 1842 ~ June 1, 1914 "Earth's beauties you may enjoy, And delight in them find, O, the bliss of the sweet thought, What Heaven will be to the blind" NOTE: Ben Ponzoo was Peter Tennant's slave. According to "Memories" by Ross Tennant, Ben died about 1885. His wife, Milly, is said to lie in the grave next to him. Peter Tennant was the son of Richard and Elizabeth Haught Tennant. His wife, Elizabeth, was the daughter of Adam Brown. Nimrod Tennant was the son of Peter and Elizabeth Brown Tennant. His first wife was Catherine, daughter of Jacob J. and Anna Barbara Haught Moore. She died in childbirth. His second wife was Emella, daughter of George P. and Rebecca Wilson. Naomi, Malinda and Elizabeth, were daughters of Nimrod and Emella. All three girls were blind. There are more graves in this cemetery with no markers. Nimrod and Emella had three children, Mary, Peter and Benjamin, who all died within a few days of each other in 1856 of scarlet fever. They are probably here, also.
