INTRODUCTION. To the Alumni of West Virginia University: The alumni of any institution of learning are its greatest asset and the closer the connection between them and the Alma Mater the better. For this reason your Alma Mater has made it a special task as one of the features of the celebration of its fiftieth anniversary to hunt out as far as possible the graduates of these fifty years and list them anew and mail this list to every living alumnus. Many of these alumni had not been heard from for several years and ten are still missing at this writing. The 1500 now living and found are scattered through forty-four states, nine foreign countries, District of Columbia, Porto Rico, and the Hawaiian Islands. Hundreds have remained in West Virginia and are found in the lead in all trades, professions and occupations, a body of men and women of whom any institution may justly feel proud. During the early years of the University lists of alumni were published from time to time as part of the annual catalogue. A more complete list, "The Alumni Record," prepared by Waitman Barbe was published by the Alumni Association in 1903. In 1913 an "Address List of Alumni" was prepared by James Scott Stewart, Waitman Barbe and David Dale Johnson, an editorial committee appointed by the Board of Regents. The present list was compiled by Rex B. Hersey, Secretary of the University Y. M. C. A. Mr. Hersey's work has been carefully revised by the President and the University editor and extended comparisons have been made not only with the previous lists of 1903 and 1913 but with the catalogues and the original records of the Regents, the Executive Committee and the Faculty, and it is believed that the pages following contain accurate and complete lists of the graduates of West Virginia University from 1870 to the present time. For greater convenience three lists are given: one by classes, one alphabetically arranged, and one showing living alumni grouped according to their place of residence. Information as to any of the missing alumni whose names are found on the enclosed slip or as to any errors or omissions in regard to names, dates or present addresses which you may detect will be very gladly received. The University is anxious to keep in close touch with you and to that end will always welcome any information in regard to your movements and achievements. This is still your University. Has it helped you by making you able to cope successfully in life's struggles? If so, show your gratitude by keeping in close touch with us and by lending your influence wherever you can for the advancement and upbuilding of your fostering mother. FRANK B. TROTTER.
