PASSED AWAY

Died at his home in Morgantown at 10 p.m. Tuesday, May 24, George E. 
VanGilder, aged 43 years 3 months and 29 days, after a long illness of kidney 
disease.

	The news of Mr. Van Gilder’s death comes as a great shock to his host 
of warm personal friends in this city and vicinity, although it has long been 
known that he was in a critical condition his friends had never ceased to hope 
that he would ultimately be restored to health, and the news of his demise 
will cause genuine heartfelt regret throughout this community.
	
	At a recent Republican primary election Mr. VanGilder was nominated as 
the party’s candidate for re-election as assessor of the second assessment 
District of Monongalia County, the duties of which office he had so ably 
discharged.

	As a mark of his official and personal popularity it is only necessary 
to state that he polled a far larger vote than any of the fifty odd candidates 
on the Republican ticket.

	He was the son of John O. VanGilder, deceased, and wife and was born 
and spent all of his life in this county and city.  He was possessed of a 
kindly, quiet disposition that made friends of all with whom he came in 
contact.

	Deceased was a painter by trade, but for some time engaged in the 
merchandise business in this city.

	Although not a member of any church he was both as boy and man free 
from any bad habits and lead a Christian, honorable and blameless life, and 
his soul has passed from earth to his Master, free from stain.

	He was an honored member of the local lodge of Knights of Pythias.

	Mr. VanGilder was married several years ago and is survived by his 
wife, four daughters, his aged mother, two sisters and seven brothers. 
(actually two brothers and seven sisters)

	Funeral services will be held at the resident, No. 54 University 
Driveway, at 10 a.m. Thursday, after which the remains will be laid to rest in 
Mt. Union cemetery.

Jessie was the daughter of Sampson Frum Pool and Sarah Louise Harner.
