Autograph Album of George Ethelbert Van Gilder, Morgantown, West Virginia. Dated 1888-1889 George Ethelbert Van Gilder, son of John O'Ray Van Gilder and Mary Hill was born in the Morgantown area on January 27, 1861. Records indicate that George was employed as a teacher during the 1800's. He was also elected to the post of secretary of the school board in Monongalia County in 1883. The signatures found in the album are those of students, relatives, and personal friends of George Van Gilders. The surnames of his former students indicate that George taught at the Woodlawn School #2, which was located north of Morgantown. Each individual who signed the autograph album, wrote a brief poem as well as signing and dating their work.
