Bill of Sale Slaves Thomas Walker to Polly Walker 9th Day of September 1846 Monroe County Virginia (Now West Virginia) Know all men by these present that I Thomas Walker of the County of Monroe and State of Virginia for and in considerations for one thousand dollars to me in hand paid by my daughter Polly Walker at and before the sealing and delivery of these presents the receipt whereof I hereby acknowledge hath granted bargained and sold and by these presents doth grant bargain and sell unto the said Polly Walker the following three slaves viz. Rufus a man a bout 22 years of age. Caroline a female about sixteen years of age and Delia Vashti a female child above 5 years old and future increase of the females aforesaid. To have and to hold the said slaves and their future increase as aforesaid unto the said Polly Walker her heirs & forever: And I the said Thomas Walker for myself my heirs doth hereby convey the right and title to the said slaves to the said Polly Walker free from the claim or claims of all and every person or persons whatsoever shall and will warrant & forever defend by these presents. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 9th day of September 1846 Thomas Walker seal NOTE: This signature is written and not just an X mark. Monroe County to wit We James M. Byrnside and John Peters Justices of the Peace in & for said County do hereby certify that Thomas Walker Sr. party to a bill of Sale bearing date the 9th day of September 1846 and here unto annexed personally appeared before us in our county aforesaid and acknowledged the same to be his act and deed and desired us to certify said acknowledgement to the Clerk of Monroe in order that the said bill of sale may be recorded.
