Union, December 15, 1847 Dear Allen: Yours of the 10th Int. informing us of the illness of John came to hand today. You requested me to send you a list of John’s negroes and the prices put upon them by Pa. Which are as follows: George Caruthers $500 Sam Hays $600 Chapman $600 John Arthur $600 Henry $600 Banks $600 Amanda $450 William (her son) $150. She has one born since. Ann $450 Lucinda (has fits) $0, John (her son) $250, Lucy (her daughter) $150, Ann(youngest) $100 Harrison Dickason $500, Sally (wife) $400, Ann (daughter) $300, Isaah (son) $200, Youngest boy $100 Frances $500, Pheby $400, John Lewis $300 There are 22 named above. Pheby lost a son since John got her. And Amanda has had a child since John owned her. Agreeable to the prices above without putting any price to Amanda’s youngest. They amount to $7750.00 I suppose Sally Dickason will not sell for the amount she is put down at or John Arthur will not sell at this time for the amount he is put down at. John is getting better and it is probable he will get well. I think the others will sell at the prices named or perhaps more. Will you sell them to traders or try and sell them privately; that is to persons who are not trading in Negroes? If you want any person to look at them I think you had better fix on the 1st day of January. There are always some to hire here on that day, and a good many people here. Or perhaps you want them taken to Richmond. Let me know your intentions as soon as you can conveniently. John Echols returned from the Red Sulphur this evening. He says Adair will be here on Monday to make some arrangements. He says he thinks he can give Christopher Beirne as security or General Chapman or both of them. If John Alexander offers the Handley place or the Brick House field for rent, will you want to rent them or either of them? And if you do, how much must I bid them to? I suppose they will be put up to rent on New Years Day. The Handley place will graze fifty cattle well. Henderson French wrote to me to send by General Chapman the $600 you wrote to him he could get. He said he had not time to come for it. Chapman did not go to the Mercer Court and of course I did not send the money. I have not heard from him since. I loaned the Reverend H.I. Chandler $235 with I. Alderson as security. I loaned Joshua Ellis $100 in ten cent pieces. I have on hand yet more than French is to get and enough to pay the Rev. John D. Shanklin if he calls for it. I suppose you will have seen Uncle Michael before this reaches you. The weather has been remarkably warm and wet. We have been very uneasy about our pork. But it is now cold and the pork is all safe. Sarah Ann has gone to Lewisburg with Aunt Agatha. I don’t know how long she will stay. Andrew Beirne has bought Lewis Campbell’s Second Creek land. He is to give $10,000. John Echols drew up an article of agreement and the bonds. On the 1st of September next he is to pay $2000. And on the 15th day of October $1000 and one thousand dollars per annum until all is paid with three per cent interest. And gave Lewis Campbell the choice of his work horses in the bargain. I.M. Lanius would not agree that J. Echols should put in the note that Lanius owes the Estate towards paying for the house and lot. McDaniel has moved. Lanius has bought Chandler’s house and lot and Chandler and family are going to the tavern to board on the 1st of January. He is to give $650 for the house and lot. Hope your family are well. Everybody well here. Your Brother, Lewis E. Caperton Judge Sanders would like very much to hear whether or not you have seen Mrs. Moffit. He send his respects to you and says keep very cool.
